My friend has been experimenting with mono green defiler, playing augar of autumn for a source of card draw and kodama of the east tree to give all modified creatures trample. It gets stupid sometimes. Most defilers are slept on at this moment.

I think the problem you're having with Defiler is that you're deck is completely low to the ground/aggro while it's a top-end that rewards you for holding back (Or at the very least being able to reload your hand later on).
