Each week KC and Jesse check out an overlooked game on Steam and decide whether or not it’s a “Hidden Gem”. This week they’re checking out Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse.

Wouldn’t say hidden, but it’s a gem!
Yes! The first few Shantae games are artistic gold ❤
Definitely not hidden lol but yes it’s a gem
I somehow missed the shantae games growing up, heard about this game a few years ago on the 3ds when i was looking for good platformers. Definitely a fun game but it does involve a ton of puzzles and backtracking thought the levels multiple times.
The original GBC game is just a little too hard, but was fun (and I sold it for loads!). The modern ones are all great too, but I don’t think of them as PC games.
They are critically loved as the original was made by ex IGN staff so – bias!!
Pirate's Curse is very good, but it ain't a Metroidvania
They look like great games ruined by a hypersexualisation of every single female character
Only real problem I have with the "Metroidvania" label is how much emphasis on the "vania" half people give it.
Like, did we just start pretending that every Castlevania prior to Symphony of the Night doesn't exist?
Shantae isn't a "Genievania"
It's a Geniroid…a Metnie…
A "Metroid-like"
Hell, Metroid isn't even the first game to do it.
Adventure on the Atari was, but nobody likes that game so we don't care.
Metroid is an "Adventure-like".
I love the Shantae games! Fun, funny, great art, and gameplay. Half-Genie Hero was my first Shantae game, and although its still my favourite, i went back and played all the previous ones, and the latest one and enjoyed those a lot too.
Pirate's Curse is very different from all the other Shantae games, and it's one of the rare few Zeldavania titles that exists.
It's 100% worth a playthrough though as the game is just great fun and very captivating.
These games should be known as Mappy Backtrackies from now on.
Hidden? Maybe in the sense that its old (its from the GBA era) but otherwise… yeah, this is pretty universally reviewed as a good game.
