Is Avatar (2009) Overrated?

Avatar 2 is coming out this year so I decided to rewatch the first one and see how it holds up. I remember really loving it in the theaters, but I felt very outnumbered by the lackluster response. It seemed to me, from what I heard from friends and the internet in general, is that most people didn’t like it very much. Why have I heard nothing but negative stuff about this film? If its so bad, why is it getting a sequel? People say it’s “overrated”, so let’s investigate.

Directed by James Cameron, Avatar (2009) stars Sam Worthington as Jake Sully and Zoe Saldana as Neytiri a Na’vi Warrior. Also starring Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Giovanni Ribisi.

  1. There were people who wanted to die and be reincarnated as one of the blue people. I think that that’s died down… mostly. There may be some fanatical devotees who hunger for anything more: I can see why there’s a sequel if not a mess of them. I was expecting sequels sooner.

  2. Ask a casual film goer to name a Star Wars or Star Trek character they’ll usually get it right. Ask a casual film goer to name an Avatar character they won’t be able to. Saw it once , it looked nice but that’s about it. It irks me how Cameron is trying to make it something bigger than it is. It’ll never be a Star Wars or Indiana Jones. Working on 5 sequels all at once is exhausting knowing there’ll be a steady drip of these over the next few years.

  3. People adored this movie and then got caught on the bandwagon of hating on it. This happens with a LOT of movies, like The Force Awakens. People LOVED Force Awakens, and now they lump it in with Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker.

  4. When you think about it Avatar, The Abyss and Aliens all have the same common DNA story wise. It's like James Cameron just kept rewriting Aliens with different creatures until he got Avatar. Giovanni Ribisi is Burke from Aliens. Stephen Lang is the same character as Michael Beihn from The Abyss. There are other more consistent crossover elements as well. I enjoyed the spectacle of Avatar, but it's just an evolved version of Aliens.

  5. I’ll admit, when this movie came out I was one of the people overhyping the heck out of it, and claimed it was the greatest movie I’ve ever seen, years later, I still like the movie, but I certainly see the flaws it has.

  6. I thought it was ok. My biggest problem with it was how long it was. It really didn't need to be that long. Felt like I'd been in the cinema forever. Shame because visually it was truly groundbreaking.

  7. Avatar was very-well-made 'vanilla' ice cream at the dessert shop, but what made it special was the incredible in-house toppings they added to your order (the 3D). Best toppings ever, they say. You also could buy a tub of their vanilla ice cream to take home. But eating at home, it just isn't the same without those exclusive shop toppings. So are we to judge the shop's product based on the tub we have at home? Or the decorated version we had at the shop itself?…which is what everyone in town was raving about.
