Sydney’s need for a third cruise terminal has never been more pressing, with record-breaking cruise seasons fuelling billions in economic activity and creating thousands of jobs. In this video, we explore the bold proposal for ‘Monterey Island,’ a $50 billion artificial island in Botany Bay, and its potential to reshape Sydney’s cruising landscape. We’ll also look at alternative terminal options, from Port Kembla to Garden Island, as well as the possibility of ‘ship stacking’ at the existing Overseas Passenger Terminal. With the NSW Cruising Industry Advisory Panel’s recommendations expected soon, will Sydney finally get the solution it needs, or is a third terminal still a distant dream?

I think they'll go the easiest route with ship-stacking – maybe coupled with overnight stays.
The Miami-style island sounds cool, young families would love that, but where will the $$$ come from?
I don't understand why the Navy has to hold on to that land 🤔
Botany Bay! A bit ambitious for NSW but what a drawcard for tourism. 😃
Honestly – what space is left in Botany Bay ?? The docks take up a sizable portion – so wha'ts left ?? Throw in the two runways – and you can't have anything underneath them – then the whole idea is a pipe dream. Of course there's zero infrastructure to get people there off Monterey (let's not forget about it destroying the bay and the George's River – – – and even if they were to come to Sydney for a stopover – who the heck would want to get off there and explore Sydney ??) Of course – the $50B is another dream. It's a pity the naval yards are still used.
A $50 Billion island is beyond what could be financed – good idea but it sounds a bit like Saudi Arabia’s artificial islands – not sure the greenies would allow that here.
Someone in the comments suggested moving the ferries and that would be more feasible than the island idea, move the ferries to the other side of the bridge 🤷♀️. Let’s just hope they make a decision and don’t drop it in the too hard basket.
Other than for river boats I hadn't heard the term "ship stacking" before in the context of cruise ships. Does it occur anywhere in the world? I'd be interested to hear how it works in practice. Presumably the non wharfed ships are moored but the time from mooring to wharf tie up could be prohibitive. If limited to two ships it might work and that would double the capacity.
Good video as always
An interesting idea but I agree this will all just be shelved for another government to try to deal with and they will force ship stacking so they can say 'Look we solved it'
Too many martinis for those developers. Thanks for the info Adrian, cheers.
Richard Davey, Manger of a premium cruise agency, put forward the notion of double stacking at the Overseas Passenger Terminal (OPT), a solution which has been rejected already by major cruise lines, when he was part of the last review, commissioned by Mike Baird, ex- Premier, NSW. Celebrity Cruises President and CEO of Celebrity Cruises, Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, at the time said, “None of us are interested in double stacking” as it creates a “terrible experience” for guests.
The island makes an interesting concept but unlikely to happen. A lot of ports oversea are commercial container ports that do work so the idea of Botany Bay has merit. Will never get the Navy out of Sydney harbour. The whole passenger terminal dilemma reminds me of the second Sydney airport story when Kemps Creek was put forward in the 1970's but did not start until 50 years later. Don't hold your breath.
If the foreign-owned cruise lines want a new place to berth their ships then it is very simple let them pay for it, even though there does not appear at this time any need for things to change from what they are. Their ships are not registered here so not under Australia law, they do not pay income tax and see no reason why public money should be spent on something for so few entitled people. About time these cruise lines started paying their way.
It will never happen
It’s another case of the too hard basket, the government has been there done that for so long ,garden island is and always will be the only option they just don’t want to upset the navy hierarchy even though they good easily move to Jarvis bay
I can already hear the locals of Monteray and Brighten Le Sands screaming in protest of that proposal.
Why not just develop Cockatoo Island? As far as I can see, it's ideal!
Has anyone looked at Broken Bay, Pittwater, Cowan Creek, lower Hawkesbury. It’s a lot closer than Newcastle or Port Kembla. There is a lot of unused coast there, and sure it is National Park but there is a lot of it and would only take a tiny portion for a terminal and access road and what a wonderful introduction to Australia for those arriving by ship to see the nature not just the city.
I just hope that they include some public transport infrastructure to a new cruise terminal. The Brisbane terminal is lovely but you either drive or catch a taxi or ride-share. I’ve not cruised from White Bay (yet) but I believe it has similar issues.
Foreign visitors want to sail in and out of Sydney's iconic harbour and who can blame them; it’s a great experience time after time. And it’s so convenient to have the ship docked in the CBD.
I’m afraid I don’t have any solutions to offer. But it seems a shame that there’s no interest in home porting from Melbourne or Adelaide or Perth. Perhaps it’s not economically viable. 🤷♂️
Never quite undstood why they can't remove warf 5 & 6 Make the other warfs double in length to stick out further into the harbour to make up for missing warf space…
Then stack side by side in Circular Quay like CocoCay..?
Thanks for the video
People from all over the world fly in to cruise from Sydney just to see the opera house ams the bridge
Why not move the ferries to the opera house
So frustrating, nothing will happen period, they will over use the existing terminals… Melbourne could step up and have an amazing facility for terminals and all day parking, but they won’t build anything either… I wish I was a billionaire developer and did it myself personally, I know the benefits and potential it would have here in the Australia market
Why don't they make a cruise port at Barangaroo its deep enough for cruise ships and there is a walk way from wynyard station they just have to fit under the bridge
Why not move the navy from Garden Island to Port Kembla?
Hi Adrian, interesting dilemma, no answers. Great video. ❤ from Queensland
Yes that’s really going to happen 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
We also need more berths for cruise ships along the NSW coast. Eden is a good start but more berths would promote regional tourism.
I’m about to travel on a cruise to NZ and it will be stopping at 5 ports on the South Island plus several more on the north island.
Moving the navy to a less populated port makes sense. I can foresee missiles targeting Garden Island in the event of war with our northern neighbours.
The island will never happen. it will never get past local opposition and environmental concerns
Maybe Neutral Bay
Not sure how the artificial island will go.
I’m curious to know why the naval facility “must” remain in Sydney Harbour… could it not be relocated to Port Kembla, Wollongong or Newcastle??? And then Garden Island redeveloped into tourism hub
I thought (hopefully) the cruise industry was dying!
Stacking would also impaxt on other quay users so i cant see it being a viable option.
Perhaps a new way of clearing arrivals, replenishing and sailing times?
I live in this area on the Bay there is not enough room to build this Island. I still believe Cruise ships will be entering Botany Bay in the near future the Ferry terminal at La Perouse is nearly finished but still no Ferry contract to run from this terminal, might see tender boats from cruise ships utilizing it, the Government need to make money from the bad decision on building the ferry terminal or was that there plan after Yarra Bay was abandoned ?
