After eight months since the outbreak of the Pacific War, after many defeats at the hands of the invaders, and after many bold actions that resulted in the few successes that the Allies enjoyed during the war, the time is finally ripe for the start of the first Allied offensive against the Japanese Empire: the Invasion of the Solomon Islands. Yet this was not only the first Allied offensive of the Pacific War, this was also the first American amphibious invasion in many decades, an invasion that would cement the importance of the US Marines for years to come. Interesting how war thunder even created "jungle" map on Guadalcanal island. They inspired by the terrain of these coordinates – 9°16'44.3"S 159°44'26.0"E One of my favourites.

It's a sad commentary that certain people are praising how clever and extraordinary the Japanese military performed in the Second World War. Ignoring all evidence to the contrary. Initially successful attacks against an opposition that didn't even know they were at war, brilliant tactics like Singapore, accomplished by committing atrocities against any non combatants who fell into their hands. Or their supposed expertise in jungle or mountain warfare despite the failure in Papau New Guinea and that Japan had no more expertise than anyone else, there are no jungles in Japan to acquire this expertise. There's nothing Japan did in the war to be admired. Japanese underestimating their opponents only resulted in the near total destruction of Japan. Very clever of them.
It never ceases to amaze me how well the Marines did considering how literally everything was stacked against them. Damn the old breed were something special.
