Space is huge, immense beyond our wildest dreams. In order to explore and settle it, weâll need to learn to dream a lot bigger and bolder than ever before.

"Space is enormous, and most of everything is in it." đđđ
I love that title musicâŚ
You've done it again
I love that the guy's space suit on the thumbnail is stuck in his butt. I wonder how the hell it works, it's supposed to be pressurized, and if anything, the butt should be inflated.
I would argue that there are 5 possible scenarios for interstellar colonisation:
1. We never leave our solar system.
2. We use interstellar arcs to reach other stars taking many generations to complete the journey (most likely the arcs would be powered by a fusion reactor).
3. Relativistic speeds will allow us to travel to nearby stars taking many years to complete the journey but still within a human lifespan timeframe. These ships would be driven by antimatter engines.
4. Faster than light travel (using a warp drive) will allow us to quickly colonise and move throughout the galaxy.
5. Instantaneous travel (using wormholes) will regularly let us travel to other galaxies.
I love the compendiums even more than the regular episodes. Thanks Isaac!
Arthur, good man, before I begin this video can I ask if you've fairly presented the main problem, which is the distance between stars within an average galaxy? The ratio between the distance and stellar diameter is 50 million, meaning the sun and Alpha proxima is one grapefruit on a US west coast beach and the next grapefruit on an east coast beach. This is so extreme and indeed bizarre, coming out of deep physical principles of a collapsing gas cloud, that it's NEVER normally mentioned- never by regular quality creators like you, Petrov, Godier, Cain or anyone else. Are you going to explain this properly or are we just in for more Star Trek foolishness?
1:08:10 – Love how the plug illustrates the point. This is native advertising done right.
Escape has a (not mutualy exclusive) sister motivation of: banished.
Potentialy also solving the funding problem.
Congratulations on your awards Isaac!
Around June 2024 I started seeing articles similar to the following:
"However, new theoretical physics research by a team of researchers at the University of Waterloo and Universidad Complutense de Madrid demonstrates that kugelblitze are impossible in our current universe."
The crew of a Methuselah ship who never age and never die barring catastrophic accidents would only have a small need for population replacement reproduction , so perhaps a crew of people who are mostly asexual or who take precautions against pregnancy very seriously but are willing to take on bearing a child as a social duty would be the ideal . Children should be rare on such ships. However a child that is going to be an immortal member of the crew would be an incredible investment and the rest of the crew would take an active interest in raising the child who will become their coworker right and make sure they are happy and well adjusted and fit in with whatever culture the ship has developed over the centuries.
Great episode.
I want to go.
Will we get a future episode about Collector Ships? They sound fascinating and are obliquely referenced in some of the other generation ship episodes but could likely benefit from a full episode. This episode was amazing and clearly took a ton of effort. Excellent work!

been a while since I watched you been busy moving in our new house, but 2 hours 14 minutes esp WOW
You once did a show about space telescopes I hope someday you might revisit that topic..
I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.
How long does it take to make a two hour video?
That award was very much earned! Congratulations! Great content as well as great animations! I just wish CIG would pay attention to your videos to make a better game (Star Citizen).
did not "watched" the video, instead of listening it on Spotify, but i am sure i will watch it as soon i ve got youtube working on my television…. but i am flabbergasted how much to think of and consider and reconsider for my story of crawlonizing our System… thank you for all your work Sarah and Isaac and those unnamed workers helping to keep that channel everytime more interesting!
This is the type of content I subscribed for all those years ago
All I want to know is how I get something past ICC quarantine. đ
Oh hell yeah đŽ
Why do we have to define "advancement of civilization" in terms of "capacity to exploit resources"? is that really the purpose of human life? What about "capacity to meet requirements for living by exploiting less and less resources"? What is the point of expanding population to billions and trillions? Why don't we control human population to function in an ecologically sound manner within our existing biosphere? If we can't do that… then what kind of madness solves the problem by looking for extraplanetary resources to exploit and destroy? This whole concept is insanity.
The Habitat Compendium was Magnificent! This one was MASSIVE! Today I finally had time to sit down and watch the video from start to finish. What a wonderful body of knowledge! Youâre building your own university! (Stated un-ironically, and pun not intended.)
Well done!
Be careful saying that it is hard to imagine putting a dent in the resources available, even if absolutely mind bogglingly huge, as that is what was said in the 1800âs about the fish in the sea.
âThat should every man, woman, and child head out to sea, and throw their nets and catch as much as they could catch, it would not even begin to impact the bounty of the sea.â Paraphrased anyways.
Now we have problems with overfishing.
Want to teach a newb table games?
I think this guy is very smart but my wife (who is goodat such things), and I just cannot figure were his accent comes from. It is undoubetly the weirdest English speaking accent that I have heard. Has anyone an idea where he's from?
Our planet can become a rogue planet and earth will become interstellar. It's the most likely way we visit other places outside our solar system.
If any of you actually want any chance of success, you need to first stop and finish the science on earth to include communicating with the other life forms that are here that you have been destroying
Delete my information. I wonât say anything to any of you ever again because youâre worthless.. you act like you know more than me and you donât
You donât matter to me anymore because if you had to delete my information instead of having a discussion, you are worthless
You have a good day because you donât know who youâre playing with. Iâm your real military and youâre not following the intent of the laws for this nation or world.
