  1. For me the Thinkpad P16 (I9 12950HX/GPU 4050) is a professional work station. I have skinny ultra laptops for running long hours on battery. My p60 is nicely portable in a matching backpack! It is a business workstation class machine for me to use. It is only occasionally for demo that I need to run it on battery. I love my skinny laptop for using while outside or traveling but it will not get the same kind of work done. I use chrome, microsft office, excel, powerpoint and watch movies on my skinny laptop all the way on long flights to Australia. The skinny laptop is a different product and it can use lower power Intel chips and windows too. This provides a degree of compatibility with my new powerful workstation transportable machine.

I want to do some h.265 video 8K editing. The Nvidia A4500 is a powerful GPU including h.265 codec and the P16 is certified for many/most expensive workstation software packages beyond just video editing. My P16 12950 was first delivered to the market in Sept 2022 and not is on sale for 42% off due to the arrival of the 13950 in a couple of months. I did not want to needlessly pay $6000 or more for my desktop workstation so the sale was fantastic and made it more competitive with "gamer laptops" which do not have the expensive A4500 gpu. I am very happy with my "waffle iron". It is an awesome professional machine with hi-spec GPU firmware codecs. My machine runs stone cold and I have never heard fan so far. I am sure the battery life may be less than one hour. It came with a very compact 230 watt power module for it. I think for profession use and gamer use the docked transportable operation is fine. It is not a mobile creators/infotainment tool for some I am sure.

Laugh if you want at waffle iron but it awesome and love it.

  2. I'm thinking Apple still wins in efficiency, but I am concerned for the more pro scenarios like the desktops. The other issue is discrete graphics – M1 chips are pretty good considering they are basically a glorified iGPU, but pros need discrete graphics if they aren't working in the codecs handled by the onboard media encoders. Apple is just going to have to include all the encoders like adding AV1. I still love the idea of Apple controlling its own destiny, but they need to remain competitive for pros and play nice with others.

  3. Intel 13th Gen laptop – unlikely. Same with AMD. Desktop – absolutely – either AMD (especially X3D chips) or Intel top end 13th gen chips are serious considerations for a Desktop, especially if you pair that with a top end graphics card like the RTX 4090.

  4. For cases when brownouts is frequent and I work at home, my laptop won't last 2 hours 🙁 Also, when working outside and unlucky I forgot the adapter.. I can only work up to 2 hours. Gaming laptop is powerful (for software development)… but I cannot enjoy its portability (and battery) 🙁 I am thinking of trying out M1/M2 MacBooks because of its battery/power without the fear of brownouts or I can just leave the adapter at home and can still do the work outside home. Also processing performance of M1/M2 seems more powerful than may older laptop with i7 9th generation

  5. Basically, intel had such a hard time competing with Apple silicon that they released a de facto desktop processor and called it a laptop processor. That’s the only way to describe a processor that draws over 150 watts on a laptop.

  6. I think something in between would be great. I just don't understand apples obsession with the closed garden approach. Itl be interesting to see the comparison to the new top end AMD dragon range stuff.

  7. I cannot get it. When the performance drops to third if the laptop is unplugged and the battery barely can last an hour and also weight more than 3kg. Come on… is this a laptop? We need efficiency and then performance in laptops and that's why I beleive AMD and Apples much more better option than others in laptops.

  8. performance is pretty much irrelevant for 90% of users nowadays, a 2 year old laptop is fast enough for me and will be for a long time, what I really can't take anymore about Apple is how old MacOS feels

  9. This apple fanatic found nothing better than to justify the grand lag of the most powerful M2 from the laptop on Intel, like quotes from forums, and paying for electricity lol.
Let me remind you that in neighboring rollers on M2 they glue thermal pads due to overheating, how do you like Elon Musk? ))
Meanwhile, Intel, being a mobile device, can in high-performance software simply be much faster and more convenient than any apple product.

  10. How many times do we gotta teach you this lesson oleman?? For the last time for the past 6 years… we don’t care about a stupid heater that cooks my battery and drops performance when unplugged.

  11. Another interesting review. I would think Apple MacBook series of laptops will garner their share of fans due to their design, performance, battery life and Apple specifics features. Performance is key for many buyers, but I would think anyone trying to cross shop Apple MacBook laptops to high performance Windows Laptops will have more considerations than performance alone.

I certainly can see selecting Apple MacBook laptops requiring specific use cases and the desire to keep in the Apple ecosystem. However, the wonderful thing about the new Intel 13 Gen processor is that it gives buyers a wonderful set of premium Windows laptops to choose from. The variety within the Windows platform for laptops, 2 in 1 convertibles and slate tablets is amazing today. I happen to have my favorite Windows brands like Microsoft Surface, Samsung Galaxy Book, Lenovo ThinkPad and new to my list is Asus. I am so impressed with some of the product innovations coming from Asus lately.

Apple MacBook Pro M2 would not be my choice. I prefer Windows high performance laptops that are a replacement for my Windows Desktop. It is rare that I would need this power on the go, but if that is required it can happen with the new Intel 13 Gen powered Windows laptops.

In my specific case the Intel 13 Gen Core i7 P Series meets my needs. Which gives me an exhaustive list of Windows premium laptops to choose from. That said even though Intel has edged ahead of Apple M2 in performance, is it enough to make an Apple MacBook fan to turn away and purchase a Windows laptop, I do not think so. I use myself as an example. When it came time to replace my Windows laptop, I included an Apple MacBook as well. The Apple MacBook Air and Pro series are wonderful products and I am sure I could be happy with Apple’s MacBook if that was my preference. But in my case Windows and Android are my preferred mobile and laptop/desktop brands models.

In my view Apple simply needs to continue building some of the best mobile and laptop/desktop products in the world only as Apple can. There is really nothing like Apple’s products today with the iPhone, iPad, MacBook, iMac/Mac mini and Mac Studio/Mac Pro that all come together for Apple fans.

In my view Apple should not be worried about performance dominance, but instead to insure continued integrating software and services in all elements of their products. Apple is one of the few brands that offer a complete line of products from smartphone to tablet to laptop to desktop to smartwatch to earbuds. Samsung and Microsoft Surface came to mind for offering a similar experience and I chose Samsung Galaxy to meet my requirements.

Performance is important but not everything in my experience especially if the performance meets my expectations. Any modern Apple MacBook or Windows Laptop can easily meet my requirements today.

  12. Intel runs on x86 architecture. M chips run on ARM which are mobile processors which Apple upsized to monstrous proportions for it to be placed in a laptop. As such M chips are incredibly efficient. What Apple did was almost unfair.

  13. Wow this is simply awesome!
Better than desktop power in a small form factor.
Apple fan boys can keep whining about lack of battery life! That is all what Apple is good for.
12th gen i7 i9's smoke latest Macbook pros. That is a fact.

  15. I honestly don’t even care what Intel does. For my use case, I need power and efficiency which both my M1 Macs provide. With all this talk about lowering the carbon foot print and saving energy, it seems Intel is giving the middle finger to the whole environment “agenda”.

  16. It just pointless to talk about Intel after revolution solution from Apple without a fan noise and low power consumption! I really don't understand the point of this video? There is no future at all with x86. Two most powerful companies (amd and Intel) cannot achieve success with this architecture from the 80s.

  17. The efficiency comparison undoubtedly goes to Apple. Who wants to carry around a 150 watt power supply on them? This chip won’t touch Apple’s user base, the only laptops that will have this will be high end gaming ones.
