Infinite Warfare’s Story Could’ve been Amazing

Call of Duty Infinite Warfare, developed by Infinity Ward, is regarded as one of the most underrated games in the Call of Duty franchise. It’s story ranks among some of the best in the series, but is it as good as people say?

  2. I feel guilty to be part of the community who downvoted that infamous trailer 6 years ago. I even bought the game together with cod4re bundle at discounted price just to play the remastered modem warfare. 😢

Recently I'm trying to play games that have never been played in my library before. Infinite warfare is my first choice and damn… I feel blessed to choose this as my first one. Campaign is really good! I'd say other than the fact that antagonist's motive is a bit weak, the whole story is a space opera with steroids and it's almost logically consistent throughout the whole game.

I think the review that IW truly deserves comes down to the individual acceptance of "reality" in sci-fi. Personally I'd gladly take some premises as granted and enjoy the ride. As someone close to 30, I cried like a baby at the end. Kudos to Brian Bloom for delivering a well crafted script and his performance as Nick Reyes, along with other actors& actresses who did their best for their respective roles. It's a shame that we can hardly find something like this in 2023

  3. It's a shame how this game got the short end of the stick, simply because it came out at a time when everyone was sick of the series' futuristic motif as a whole. An over-the-top, almost Gundam-like space opera entry coming on the heels of BLOPS4 and Advanced Warfare was just unfortunate timing, and the backlash probably means that we'll never see a return to this setting. From now on, Activision is just gonna cycle through WWII, Modern Warfare and Black Ops until they run this franchise into the ground.

  4. BTW after finishing your video, I think you overlooked the theme of sacrifice throughout the game.

There are call backs to previous conversations between characters. Like Reyes and Omar's first conversation outside the deck about whether the judgement call of previous captain Alder to ram Olympias Mons could be justified. Reyes as a squad leader focused on the safety of his team. It's reasonable because he wasn't in charge of project that contains hundreds of crew members' lives before. He didn't understand sometimes there's no perfect plan.

Then the encounter with Olympus Mons killed a couple of unknown crews, indicating that he started to feel the burden of being captain. And after that, the death of Omar and Lee in the rescue mission. Reyes made the call to save civilians and the cost was his men's lives. This was the first time he lost soldiers (apart of unknown NPCs of course) under his command. That's why he had an intense argument with Salter. He still thought he could be the saviour of Retribution.

After taking control of Olympus Mons, Reyes knew that with the anti air system destroyed by the spy, there was no way guarding the earth with two ships anymore. Therefore he chose to attack rather than defend. It's logically consistent imo, because to think that the ambush didn't destroy SetDef's Mars base entirely, you could imagine what would happen if they'd choose to play the defending role. Rebuilding the fleet was the idea when anti air system was still online back on earth. In that circumstance, destroying space elevator was the only way to postponing their attacks.(in Sci-Fi space elevator is always considered to be the only way to bringing resources from surface to space effectively)

During the battle, Reyes still put his crew's lives over the mission, resulting in the failure to ramming space elevator/station(whatever you like to call it with). Chief engineer MaCallum told Reyes the priority of being captain. After witnessing so many deaths, he finally realized that there was no going back and they needed to finish the mission no matter the cost. I remember clearly that Reyes ordered a Jackal Pilot to destroy an anti air gun even after the Jackal was out of ammo. It's kinda cliche tbh, considering that Reyes ejected twice in previous missions, but that's also an implication that he was becoming a true commander who understood what was at stake and what to sacrifice.

I don't think it's necessary to list all of the events within the game, because some of them could be written better. Like Gator's death is indeed predictable(saying it's an honor to fight with Reyes is a huge flag lol) MaCallum's death feels a bit forced but it's war and people can die that abruptly. Her reason to plan bombs and support Griff down on Mars can also be justified so I'm fine with how it turns out.

I hope you get the idea. The whole story is about sacrifice. It's the transition of Reyes' mindset. He was a good leader at first, but not a good commander. After the game he became one of the best commanders in gaming history. So it's really a shame that IW didn't give us a more charismatic antagonist. If the background story is more polished, their motive to fight as hard as they can could be even more touching.
