Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny REVIEW / Nostalgia bomb to end the series – Nerd Legion Ep. 3

In the first episode of Nerd Legion to examine a feature film, Monte and DoA discuss their (mostly) fond impressions of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. They explain some of the historical details the movie build upon, including the Antikythera Mechanism, the life of Archimedes, the Lance of Longinus, and Nazi mysticism. While Dial of Destiny freely repeats many Indiana Jones tropes, including Nazi castles, supernatural artifacts, bringing melee weapons to gun fights, and loveable street urchins, fans of the series should find the nostalgia heartwarming and entertaining.

Nerd Legion is a weekly podcast exploring science fiction and fantasy TV shows and films as well as other aspects of nerd culture. Featuring long-time esports casting duo Erik “DoA” Lonnquist and Christopher “MonteCristo” Mykles, the show highlights their years of established synergy and banter to lend humor and insight into the latest pop culture trends.

  1. Nothing is stopping u guys from going back and discussing older media, in fact im sure most of your fans (including me) would prefer if you went back and talked about some of the more notable shows and movies rather than the mediocre slop thats being churned out these days

  2. Really enjoyed this episode, especially the added historical context you were able to add to the film.

I would have a slight preference towards one long episode, as I imagine splitting could slightly get in the way of stuff like cross show comparison and generally push you away a little bit from being free flowing and towards being more structured, but I dont really mind either way. Will happily watch it all whichever method you put it out in.

  3. 59:12 That was not a great ending for the caracter.
You could ask Harrison Ford how he feels about the fact that his two iconic characters will now be remembered by the audience. As pitiful washed-up wrecks. Is that what he had in mind? One is murdered by his son and the other would prefer to die alone in the past and be forgotten because he has nothing left to live for. No job, no wife, no family. Bravo Kathleen! You did a great job.
Fortunately, most people see it that way and refuse to watch this junk in the cinema.
It's official. Box office receipts for Indi 5 yesterday, 12 days after the premiere: $3.2M minus 73% to the previous week and only 3rd place. That's down to $700 per theater! 💃 🕺🏻
And in two days it will be destroyed by Mission Impossible.

  4. I watched it last night and I was pleasantly surprised. From what I heard I thought it would be much worse than it turned out. The first 30 minutes and last 30 minutes were great, however, the middle 90 minutes was extremely slow and predictable though.

  5. I’d rather have separate episodes for topics so I can pick and choose what to watch. But you guys should decide what’s better for ad sense with either longer videos but lower total amount of videos or more shorter videos .

  6. "looks great for 80" I'm pretty sure they used the deaging technique during the whole film. You guys apparently not noticing shows that it might have been done pretty well, but I've seen other reviewers say that it didn't work too well for them.

  7. As a 1st generation Indiana Jones fan, who has been one since I first saw ROTLA in 1981 when I was 14 years old, I can happily say that I absolutely LOVED Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny… It was an exciting, thrilling, and thoroughly entertaining film… and quite a touching and moving film as well… I haven't had a cinematic experience like this in quite a while, that's for sure… IT WAS FANTASTIC!

Harrison Ford was BRILLIANT (as always!)… What a joy it was to see one of the LAST GREAT MOVIE STARS up there on the big screen giving it his all! DOD was a more than fitting send-off for my favorite whip-cracking archeologist, and a huge part of that success is all thanks to the great Harrison Ford!…

Phoebe Waller-Bridge (who I knew nothing about, aside from her small part in Solo, as I am a huge Star Wars fan) was also outstanding as Indy's latest co-adventurer… I really liked the character of Helena… What a breath of fresh air she was… I thought that the actress did a "Phoebe-nominal" job!…

As a HUGE George Lucas/Steven Spielberg fan, I was initially worried to know that the two of them would not be directly involved with this film, but director James Mangold (who I also knew nothing about, having not seen any of his previous films) and his writers KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK… You can just tell from interviews with him that Mangold has a massive sincere appreciation for Indiana Jones and its legacy, and for Harrison Ford, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and John Williams… And speaking of John Williams… What can I say, the man is truly the GREATEST FILM COMPOSER of all time, even after 91 years (like we all don't know that ALREADY, right?).

Not only was DOD a thrilling rollercoaster ride of a movie with some great new characters, incredible visuals and exotic locations, amazing action sequences, a terrific "McGuffin" ,and a wildly

over-the-top "bonkers" ending (which I loved!), but it was also a very poignant, introspective reflection of Indiana Jones himself, how history has defined him, and his place in history… The movie had such incredible emotional weight and HEART to it… And I absolutely LOVED that.

    I will admit it… I got a bit "choked-up and teary-eyed" a few times during this movie…

Yes, I got "emotional" in an Indiana Jones movie… And it felt GREAT!

At this moment, having seen DOD only once, I would rank and rate the series like this:

#1 – RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK …………………….(10/10)

    #2 – THE TEMPLE OF DOOM……………………………(10/10)

#3 – THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL…..(10/10)

    #4 – THE LAST CRUSADE………………………………..(10/10)

    #5 – THE DIAL OF DESTINY………………………………(10/10)

I can't help but give them ALL a 10/10, because I love them all so much.. .

ROTLA and TOD are both on my "Top 10 Greatest Films of All Time" list…

These first two films are PERFECT… They have been, are, and always will be

the BEST Indiana Jones movies.. Nothing can touch these two CLASSICS…

And TLC, KOTCS, and DOD are not too far behind… They are terrific, too!…

And "YES", you read correctly… I ranked KOTCS at #3 and 10/10… I absolutely ADORE the film… It's terrific… Pure unadulterated escapism, and SO MUCH FUN… It does NOT deserve the hate that it gets!

Regarding my list… At the moment, I did put DOD last on my list at #5, only because my love of the four Classic films from Lucas and Spielberg knows no end… They are all THAT special to me,

having been in my life for so long… But I do love all five films equally for different reasons…

And who knows… maybe after seeing DOD a few more times, I could possibly see a time in the future where I find myself bumping it up a notch to #4… over TLC (which, even though I absolutely adore TLC, I find it to be the "slightly weaker" film out of the first four)… I guess time will tell!

So, in conclusion… I absolutely LOVE the Indiana Jones series… I have ALWAYS loved the first four films with a passion… and now I can happily say that I love ALL FIVE films with a passion…

And this term "nostalgia bait" that's being thrown around here in a negative way…
I don't know, maybe it's a generational thing, because I love that in my favorite movies!
DOD was a thrilling joyride down memory lane… and that's NOT a bad thing… That's GLORIOUS!

    Always remember…

IF ADVENTURE HAS A NAME, IT MUST BE INDIANA JONES!

  8. I will come back to this after watching the movie at some point in the future 😀

And I like the long video format and the jumping around topics is one of the key things I love about all the shows and casts you guys have done throughout the years.

  9. I’m really biased as a die hard tron legacy fan. And while clue does look really fake, I actually like how well it works to show the shallowness of Flynn’s ambitious self. He’s so lifeless that even his skin looks fake. Obv they didn’t do it on purpose but I still think it works well.
