INDIANA JONES 5 (How to Destroy Legacy) EXPLORED

The next Kathleen Kennedy self-insert picture they’re calling “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” has arrived. Instead of Rey, we have Helena, and taking the spot of Luke Skywalker on the sacrifice altar is Indianna Jones.

A sequel to 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, this fifth installment, directed by James Mangold and written by Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, Jonathan Kasdan, and David Koepp is supposedly the final treasure hunt for Jones.

Starring Harrison Ford, John Rhys-Davies, Karen Allen, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Ethan Isidore, and Mads Mikkelsen, this time we’re heading to 1969, with Indy and Helena Shaw – his distant goddaughter, who are trying to secure a device with world-altering potential, before the Nazi-turned-NASA scientist, Jürgen Voller, can rewrite the ending of World War II.

Dial of Destiny is the first in the series not directed by Spielberg or written by Lucas and you can tell. Costing over $295 million, and with a marketing budget to match, Indianna Jones 5 is not only the priciest venture in the Indiana Jones franchise, but one of the most expensive films ever. And unfortunately, projections don’t see Disney recuperating their costs.

Savaged one month before its worldwide release at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, the Dial of Destiny has had a lukewarm opening reception to say the least. The consensus was clear, most praised Harrison Ford’s performance, Mangold’s direction, Williams’ score, and the action, which I wasn’t too surprised by.

But there was no love lost for the lengthy runtime, CGI overload, Pheobe Waller bridge, the depiction of Jones as a broken man, a lack of the spirituality and mysticism of the original trilogy, and the absence of the 30s and 40’s setting, which is where the character belongs.
So is it as bad as the French say? Or are there some hidden gems for us to dig up? Découvrons-le !

  1. What has really made me hate this new era of nostalgia movies, is the obvious attempts to make the old protagonists seem evil or unworthy.

Then they insert new characters that somehow are amazing at everything they do without really ant explanation or justifications. Then try to say, "It's just like the old movies."

Characters like Indy aren't timeless, heroic, and fun because they are perfect at everything. Indy was a flawed character that most of the time got lucky, had to use intelligence, or think outside the box to get the job done. Honestly, if you go watch the old movies, Indy is getting his a$$ kicked most of the time. I still cannot understand who this movie is meant for, or why Disney would continue to allow their investments to be destroyed by the same person… over… and over.

  2. I agree that the ending felt rushed and failed to address the story three about Indiana Jones getting framed. Jones lacks agency in the film with Helena Shaw driving the story. Phoebe Waller-Bridge may not have worked well with Dial of Destiny but I think she could make a good Dr Aphra, a character from the Marvel Star Wars comics. Like Shaw, Aphra is unscrupulous, manipulative and self-serving.

I think the story would have been better had they given Marion Ravenwood a bigger role and have Voller kill her at the start. This would have given Jones a motive for embarking on the quest as a means of exacting revenge against Voller for killing his wife. Instead,we get a pared down version of the character in the conclusion. I couldn’t stand Shia Le Bouf in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull but felt that the way his character Mutt was written off was cheap.

  3. The whole premise is silly to me. The ark, real or not, was supposed to have supernatural powers.

The antikithera device was just a low level calculator. And certainly not a computer.

  4. An idea. Mutt still dies in Vietnam, but Short Round is there and unable to save. Then you put Short Round (dealing with PTSD and survivors guilt) with Indy and Marian who are grieving the loss of their child and together through the adventure start on the path of healing. You could include flashbacks to Mutt and Short Round in Vietnam together along with events leading up to Mutt's death. Toss in Short Round wanting it to go back and save Mutt, Indy with his way of saving Mutt, and Marian with her way. Keep the Mads Mikkelson as the villain of course and make him less of an idiot.

  5. I’m no fan of Indiana Jones, but even I’m getting depressed by this destruction of beloved series. I’m scared that they will go after one that’s dear to me now and that it’s only a matter of time.

  6. Why the fuck do people even care about reviewing them? Like after they obliterated Luke I understood either movies today are unironic political cartoons or shitty yes men directors that just do whatever the big company funding them says.

  7. Thank you for enduring this so I don't have to.
From your summary, an adventure focused on the real spear of Longinus could have made a worthy Indy movie, instead of …this.
    Such a waste.
