Indian capital world's most polluted: Diwali fireworks add to already toxic smog

Air pollution in India’s capital city reached ‘hazardous’ levels on Friday after a fireworks ban was largely ignored during the Hindu festival of lights.

New Delhi frequently tops the list of the world’s most polluted cities. It’s blanketed in cancer-causing smog each year.

But its cars and stubble burning remain the main causes of its pollution.

Al Jazeera’s Bernard Smith reports.

  1. I don't know why there is the culture of buring firecrackers in diwali…. All this majority hindu's festivals(holi, makar sankranti etc)are so disastrous for nature and they claim that their all gods are in nature😅😂

  2. Hey guys don't blame fireworks it's Delhi government who not able to control 30% from construction,26% from buring farms, then from cars or other pollution or see fire work not caused the pollution which harm so much or it is increased 3% pollution only single day on diwali. Or what about other day as same as usual. Go see blood on sewage on Eid then I am able to say waste of life or blood. And Al Jazeera is biased or funded media of non democratic qatar.

  3. Well to blame fireworks as the only cause of pollution in Delhi is not justifiable , Delhi remains polluted perennially.

Not only Delhi is polluted but 15+ cities in India are heavy polluted and government is not doing anything to it due to corporate, companies, industries pressure ; there aren't any strict laws against those like Europe

  4. I know the complete ban of firecrackers is a bit of difficult job in India, but why doesn't the government tightens rules regarding the burning of crackers. Like regulating it's sales and declaring a specific time frame ,for like 2 hours, for 1 day, and allowing only bursting of green crackers during Diwali and those caught disobeying shall be penalised. Diwali is a festival of lights, not one of smoke and dust.

  5. All indian festivals cause pollution, whether its water pollution with idol immersion along with the powdered colored chemicals, or the sound pollution during their religious parades, or the air pollution with firecrackers. And they are all proud of it. They won't stop. And politicians need votes, so they would only promote this further.
