Indian Airforce is modernising its fleet of Mi-17 helicopters with powerful electronics & EW suite

MI-17 Massive Upgrade

Recently we have informed regarding the upgrade of Mi-17 helicopters of Indian Air Force. Four of IAF’s Mi-17 helicopter sqns have now been dedicated for light attack role. These helicopters are going to be armed with ATGMs and rockets. They will also be integrated with the Spike NLOS with a range of 25km. Now, there few more update coming regarding the massive upgrade of these helicopters. As reported by The Tribune, The move to upgrade the older versions comes in the backdrop of a recent initiative by the IAF to involve the industry in the overhaul of the Mi-17 V5 in view of its limited in-house capability.

No.3 Base Repair Deport (BRD)

At present, the Mi-17 helicopters are overhauled at No.3 Base Repair Deport (BRD) in Chandigarh. It is the largest helicopter maintenance establishment for Soviet or Russian origin helicopters, including the older variants of the Mi-17 and the Mi-25/35 gunships.

Established in 1962, 3 BRD has been repairing, overhauling, modifying and retrofitting the Mi-17 series, their engines and aggregates since 1991. The Depot also assembled and flight tested the V5 version after they were inducted in 2012. In 2019, a new assembly line became operational at the depot for overhauling the Mi-17V5.

In addition to the indigenization of various types of aero-spares to cut dependence on imports, the depot has also upgraded and modified helicopters to enhance their capability for meeting various operational requirements.

However, the existing capacity of 3 BRD is limited. This is the reason why a significant number of the latest variant, the V5, have to be sent overseas for major overhaul. Also the IAF’s older generation Mi-17 medium lift helicopters are set for a major upgrade which will BRD will find challenging to upgrade.

Mi-17 Upgrade details

Under the Mi-17 upgrade project, 86 helicopters will be modified, which includes 54 Mi-17 and 32 Mi-17 1V variants. The works will be outsourced to the industry and undertaken at the IAF establishments in Chandigarh, Guwahati and Yehalanka., with plans being firmed up on retrofitting them with advanced avionics and electronic warfare suits.

The New systems will include Smart MFDs, TACAN, TCAS, satnav suite, EW suite, MAWS, RWR, IFF, Wx radar, SDR, CMDS etc.

The upgrade is aimed to facilitate Mi-17 and Mi-17 1V helicopters with state-of-the-art and advanced electronic warfare and surveillance equipment. The modification work comprises fitment of 14 systems on Mi-17 and MI-17 1V each. Further, there are about 41 mechanical and 67 electrical installations for MI-17 and 46 mechanical and 73 electrical installations for MI-17 1V.

The modifications listed out for the Mi-17 involves removal of some existing avionics, electronic systems and navigation aids and replacing them with smart multi-function displays, weather radar, traffic collision and avoidance system and air data systems.

Mi-17 Capability & service in IAF

The IAF reportedly operates over 220 Mi-17 series helicopters that form the backbone of its vertical lift component which are extensively used for tactical missions such as troops transport, assault, special operations, ferrying and air dropping supplies in high altitude areas, search and rescue and disaster management.

These began entering service in 1991 and gradually replaced the earlier Mi-8. In 2001, 40 of the more powerful 1V variants were procured. In 2012, the IAF began inducting the advanced V5 version after assembling them at Chandigarh, of which over a 100 are reported to be in service.

Mi-17s can travel at a maximum speed of 250 km/h, have up to eight fire posts for small weapons and can transport cargo up to 4,000 kg. M-17s can carry up to 24 passengers, or 36 troops in full combat gear.

  1. Why they aren't equipping Spike NLOS on LAH 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
I have read somewhere because of excessive vibration on airframe no ATGM can be integrated on LAH 🙄🙄
Otherwise what loss do we have integrating weapons which r already in service.

It would show weapon versatility.. Even American Apache can fire hellfire as well as spike nlos.
Eurofighter typhoon can fire Amraam as well as meteor.
Even tejas mk1A would fire I derby er as well as Astra, jdam as well as hammer.

  2. US Army Special Forces in Afghanistan extensively used CIA-operated Mi-17s during the initial stages of Operation Enduring Freedom. These helicopters have seen extensive service all over the world, and if maintained well, and upgraded they can last the decade until first IMRH sees service. There is no option, hopefully better maintenace and servicing can keep these birds flying.
Better weather forecasting and satellite navigation should avoid the bad weather issues that lead to CDS Rawat crash.

  3. the Mi-17A V5 multi role helicopter gunship could do with some powerful engines . . . instead of upgrading older Mi-17V1 airframes might as well replace the aging fleet with new state-of-the-art NH90 TTH (Block II) multi role helicopter gunship . . . speaking of helos the navy could do with a small fleet of 26 brand new MH-53KB Sea Stallion II maritime multi role heavy lift helo gunship . . . the MH-53KB Sea Stallion II maritime multi role heavy lift helo gunship features fully folding main tail rotor & folding tail boom for easy stowage in aft stern section hangars of most NATO compatible surface combatants . . . has provision for a door gunner armed with 25 MM GAU-12/U six-barrel rotary cannon . . . with private sector equity participation in future defense projects such acquisitions can be realized without having to blow the defense budget . . .
