Incidents in NASCAR: Lost in Time Part 2

Special Thanks to High Octane Cards and Panther44 for their help in finding some of the lost media talked about in Part 1

Not every event, lap or turn can be recorded in every race weekend. Sometimes, the only people that can witness key moments were the ones at the facilities. Today, that seems to happen less and less as we see coverage for almost everything. But that has not always been the case as there have been many events lost to time due to the lack of coverage that they received. Because of this, most of the action from those races are virtually lost in time, including the crashes that came with it. Today, all we have are a few still images, and witness accounts from those said incidents. Join us as we continue our series of Moments in NASCAR Lost in Time.

  1. Although a regional event, one of the very worst impacts in NASCAR was Mark Walbridge during the 1988 nascar west event at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe Washington. Walbridge had driven all the way up to 2nd place, only around 3 car lengths off of the lead, when the cars steering had a horrible failure and veered into the inside wall on the frontstretch. The concrete wall was shattered from the impact, sending chunks of concrete into the pit area, hitting several bystanders and injuring some. Walbridge’s car had its entire engine ripped from the car as the car slid on the driver’s door after the impact down the frontstretch. After the car stopped, Walbridge suffered severe lacerations on his face, but would return to the series in 1989. I believe only one aftermath photo exists of the accident, with the car on its side with the engine block just below it. I have posted the image with more background information on my channel. He had amassed 5 top tens in the K&N Pro series West division during his career, with the wreak being the closest he came to winning a race. In general, I think this would be a great wreak to research in the next installment of this series.

  2. Heres a testing suggestion, for he Goody's Dash Series from 1985, Dr. Charles Ogle lost control of his car on the backstretch after cutting a tire. His #33 Like Cola Sunbird struck a knot in the grass near the infield loop and turned over, sliding on its roof down the whole chute before coming to rest. Ogle’s crash was rather mysterious, as no one witnessed it, and Ogle was the only car on the track anyway, He suffered massive head injuries, likely from hitting his head on the top of the car, and was taken to the hospital where eventually, died on December 26, never having awoken from his coma.

  3. My best friend was actually really good buddies with Shane Hall. Wish I could find exactly what he told me about how Shane felt about that crash outside of being incredibly lucky to be alive

  4. 2015 was such a brutal year for incidents, there was an incident in the Talladega Xfinity race where Brendan Gaughan used pit road to avoid the big one but struck the pit wall, injuring two crew members behind the wall.

  5. Lexan isn't bullet proof glass it is only part of the materials the make-up bullet proof glass. Also NASCAR doesn't have laminated windshield instead the windshield is Lexan.

Bullet proof glass is layers of laminate glass with a polycarbonate sheet with another laminate glass…similar to the way plywood is formed. They keep adding poly and lami to the mix until it meets the desired needs…like the bank teller's window…some are over an inch and a half thick.

Lexan is a brand name that make polycarbonate materials.

    Bullet proof glass can break.

  7. Random fun fact, a year before Jamie's accident, a piece of his car flew off at I believe Pheonix? but it flew into one of Nascar's trackside cameras and shattered it.

Driver Carl long also struck a piece of tungsten on his hood during practice at Dover that same year.
