IMPORTANCE OF LEARNING ISLAM – Shaykh Abid Khan | EICT Jummah Khutbah

The Importance of Learning Islam From Qualified and Staying Connected to Revelation

Sheikh Abid Khan’s khutbah emphasized the value of knowledge in Islam, the importance of attending gatherings of learning, and the necessity of staying connected with the Quran to develop the correct worldview. He urged the congregation to cultivate a mindset where they engage with divine revelation regularly, making it the lens through which they understand life.

1. The Virtue of Seeking Knowledge
– Sheikh Abid opened with praise for Allah’s wisdom and guidance and the importance of seeking beneficial knowledge.
– He cited the Quranic verse where Allah commanded the Prophet ﷺ to ask for an increase in knowledge:
‎ *”وَقُل رَّبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا”* (O my Lord, increase me in knowledge – Surah Taha: 114).
– The scholars of Islam have stated that if Allah had not emphasized the virtue of knowledge except by commanding His Prophet ﷺ to seek more of it, it would have been sufficient proof of its importance.

2. The Importance of Attending Gatherings of Knowledge
– Blessings of Knowledge Circles:
– The angels surround the gatherings of learning, and they report back to Allah about those present.
– Even those who attend without full attention or a sincere purpose are included in Allah’s mercy.
– Allah forgives those in these gatherings, as the hadith mentions that even those who attend for secondary reasons (like meeting friends or refreshments) are included in the blessings.
– Attending such gatherings ensures a deep spiritual connection, making it easier to understand and engage with Islamic teachings.

3. The Danger of Becoming Disconnected from Revelation
– Sheikh Abid stressed that if we do not stay engaged with knowledge, we risk becoming “cold” towards divine guidance.
– He compared this to physical fitness, explaining that just as the body needs exercise, the soul needs constant engagement with the Quran and Islamic learning to remain spiritually “warmed up.”
– Without consistent exposure to divine teachings, people start finding the Quran and its messages unfamiliar and fail to apply its guidance to their lives.

4. The Quranic Perspective vs. Our Worldly Perception
– Misunderstanding of Life’s Events:
– The khutbah highlighted how we often misinterpret worldly blessings and hardships.
– Sheikh Abid mentioned the Quran’s warning about hidden punishment:
*”We shall gradually lead them to destruction from where they do not know.”* (Surah Al-A’raf: 182)
– This means that constant material success and ease can sometimes be a form of divine punishment, if it lead a person further away from Allah.
– Why Do the Wicked Seem to Prosper?
– Many people wonder why tyrants and evildoers seem to flourish while the righteous struggle.
– The Quran provides the answer, but many fail to grasp it because they do not view life through the lens of revelation.
– Allah allows some wrongdoers to accumulate success, but this is a test and an eventual means of their downfall.
– Conversely, believers who face hardship are often drawn closer to Allah through their trials.

5. The Greatest Loss: Losing Connection with Allah
– Sheikh Abid made an emotional point, stating that the worst punishment is not worldly hardship, but being disconnected from Allah.
– He cited a hadith where the Prophet ﷺ said:
*”Whoever misses Salat-ul-Asr, it is as if he has lost his wealth and family.”*
– This means that spiritual losses are greater than material losses.
– If someone loses faith, guidance, or the opportunity to worship Allah, they have lost more than wealth, status, or even loved ones.
– He admitted that even as a khateeb, this profound truth can be difficult to internalise, emphasising the need to actively engage with divine knowledge to truly grasp it.

6. How to Strengthen Our Connection with the Quran and Knowledge
Sheikh Abid concluded with practical steps to maintain a strong connection with Islamic teachings:
1. Regular Quran Recitation – Listen to the Quran with understanding, even if it’s a translation.
2. Attend Study Circles – Participate in gatherings of knowledge at the masjid.
3. Incorporate Islamic Learning into Daily Routine – Listen to lectures or podcasts while commuting or walking.
4. Make the Quran Your Lens for Life – View current events and personal struggles through Allah’s guidance rather than solely from a narrow material perspectives.
5. Prepare for Ramadan – Use the upcoming blessed month to renew your relationship with revelation.

May Allah grant us understanding, wisdom, and a deep attachment to His words. Ameen.
