This the art history 101 textbook we were given in 1994, “Gardner’s Art Through the Ages.” I love you Caravaggio, but there is SO MUCH incredible art history outside of Europe that deserves just as much attention.
Going to the Tokyo National Museum: https://youtu.be/PqQ_6OHuSbA and the National Taiwan Museum, I feel like what I was taught in art school was a pathetic puddle the size of an amoeba. 😡I knew visiting those museums would be wonderful, but nothing prepares you for the depth and richness of the art there. xoxo Prof Lieu

I think we all know why they thought it was okay…
So, question: Why, do you think, ART HISTORY is such a hugely popular university major in the UK? It's as if almost every member of current Royalty, (not just UK!), and SOOOO many others…, major in it and, as far as I know, they aren't artists themselves. Is majoring in ART HISTORY in other countries the equivalent of majoring in ENGLISH in the United States? Can you or any of your followers demystify this for me?
Right?! Ikrrr. Everything is abt European European blah blah blah
"Non-European" art is so cool! It's a huge miss to not learn about it.
I had this experience in my survey classes for art history just a few years ago. We completely skipped the non western world in the curriculum
I didn’t skip any of it, that’s why self taught can be good..
but you are right… we only touched on African and Indigenous art in a very small way when I did start a traditional art degree many years later in my 50’s. Crazy!! To me it is some of the most interesting Art!
In some cases it still 🤦🏾♀️is nothing new under the sun 🤔🤷🏽♀️
Or Janson’s “History of Art”where there are no female artists mentioned in the text.
Wow. I wasn't sn art major but i took Art History and I should still have the textbook. I went in the 80's
When I was in one of my music history classes the professor brought up a similar issue and I corroborated by expressing how I wish we learned more about music in other parts of the world and one of my classmates responded by saying “we learn European music because we’re in America!” which annoyed and frustrated the heck out of me!!!! 🙄😡
I feel the same way, AND I have the same textbook…
Well, at least your book has that section. Mine didn't even have anything about it 😅
This makes me glad I'm living in a time where we get to hit every continent in class. I don't think my understanding of art history would be the same without it 😭
AMEN! Preach, sista!!! As a self taught artist, my art history education is significantly better than people who PAID to learn?!??
America, poorly educating its citizens for over a century. How is anyone really surprised by the rampant ignorance that surrounds us, because if you went to public school, you are lucky to graduate with the ability to read & write, AND NO ONE IS SAYING ANYTHING ABOUT FIXING IT!!! No, they are actually fighting to omit more facts in American History. According to our public school system, slavery NEVER OCCURRED, because it's illegal to teach it??!? It's ludacris, and I'm infurated!
In my first year of art fundamentals we did the first chapters and nothing with the rest of the book, but in my second year we skipped It and started with impressionism, it sucked, and the teacher was a different one
It wasn’t just the art part of history that left out most of the world in the 90s.
That is so true! And ironically this was happening at the top university in Africa😂
I know a lot of artists have been through this exact experience but I do highly recommend Titus Kaphar’s tedtalks where he talks about how he became an artist. racism in art history education was one of his biggest motivating factors
Which book is that and where can i find it ?
I think probably the non-European parts of the world didn’t focus on European art when they educate their kids. Yes? No?
As a professor, I would hope that you would now at least understand that there’s no possible way to cover all of the global art history in any sort of timeframe short of decades I’m sure you yourself have to cut out material to fit into certain structures and time frames and semesters….🤡
🙄
“I’m offended!!!!!!!!!” Loool
I hate this crap, yes it should have been covered but why be offended!
What a waste! So much powerful art missed. It's odd too, because how can you understand impressionism without Japanese art?
Very lopsided indeed !! Thanks for this 🙏❣️
I am 75 and did NOT miss out on non-European art, perhaps because wasn’t always in the west. My kids did though, and I have tried to put them right, there is so much more now to explore so Inhave never stopped learning. It is. Shame so many books just gloss over the non-European stuff though. It blew my mind when I learned that medieval cathedrals were once intricately painted all over like Hindu temples and has not been designed to be grey stone….
I took 3 Art History courses in the late 70s and ALL of them were American and European art only. I was so young and naive it didn't occur to me to question it.
How far back do you have to go before you’re no longer offended by the way things were? You see, that’s what it was like back then. I’m older than you and I read the same books that missed out loads of subjects. But things have changed for the better. Don’t waste your energy being offended. Go back to painting, that’s what you’re great at.
For the longest time, art history meant western art history.
I went to art school in the seventies and the professor that taught the Freshman art history course spent the whole year on 20th century art, including Europe (pre WW2) and New York City (post WW2). Later I had to take a class on the history of the decorative arts for my major, and the professor spent the whole semester on the 20th century architecture. I ended up taking a second semester (one was required) so I got a little more: Egyptian, Greek, and Roman, and some European (again mainly architecture). Fortunately, I was able to round things out a little with electives and picking up bits in other classes, but it was by no means all of the continents!
Yep! I had the same thoughts when they skipped! So true, Clara!!! Love your honesty and admire you sharing this!
Thanks for drawing attention to this!
Some of the most beautiful pieces of art I’ve ever seen were in Taiwan. The national palace museum was filled with incredible art
Mid to late 80s here-yep Gardner and Janson were my textbooks… yearlong Art History Survey stopped with ancient art of the Near and Middle East/North Africa (Egypt) and Islamic Art of the Middle Ages – also, not sure if you knew, but women artisans were an absent or endangered species globally and throughout history 😉
Any art history books that you would recommend? Thanks for the video.
