  1. The track getting crooked like that is called thermal deviation. Normally several inches are cut out to keep the rail aligned. Before winter and cold weather comes, a rail of around 15 feet is cut back in to keep alignment. There is a definite length to be put in, and I apologize because it has been awhile since I worked on the UPPR. UNION PACIFIC.

  3. A reason to not wear shorts in the heat is to sweat less and prevent dehydration. Pants allow saturation of sweat plus you have a level of insulation that will keep you cooler.
