5 hours with Assassin’s Creed Shadows reveals a game that is unsuccessfully trying to remix the core Assassin’s Creed gameplay loops, splitting them out across two separate characters in a way that feels awkward and poorly thought out. Combined with lifeless characterisation and an overly familiar approach to world design and exploration, I didn’t leave this hands-on session with a lot of excitement for the final product.

  1. Well goodbye to another franchise I loved once. Clearly squandered and mismanaged. I never loved the modern revision since origins although put up with it and I think now I'll just go back to play Black Flag or the Ezio collection and consider the rest of it dead. A shame it had to so obviously occur on the Japan AC that everyone asked for since the second game

  2. Lighting, textures, UI, floaty combat, and some entire assets and NPC animations look straight out of AC Odyssey — a nearly 7 year old game.

They even re-pasted the goofy spartan kick physics that send full grown men flying across the map like a cartoon.

It’s like they’ve learned nothing from any of the praise that GoT received for doing well, or any of the criticism they received for Valhalla. What a shame.

  3. This is a weird one, but alot of the other respectable youtube reviewers that had hands on enjoyed it. This feels just purely down to skills ups personal taste and maybe what he chose to do / experienced in that 5 hours vs others. Cause the game looks great from the previews to me.

  4. Ghost of Tsushima let you wear robes and be a ninja or put on heavy full samurai gear and square up. All with one dude.

It can be cool to split the characters if you make the story benefit from this like in nier automata where 2b has heavy attacks and 9s has hacking laser but that’s a game that wasn’t made by DEI hires

  5. To me, this appears to be symptomatic of ubisoft's refusal to just let an AC game have a singular female lead in their games. They are seemingly fearful of players not having a male character option in a mainline franchise entry.

Jocob and Evie were the first, and one of the best compromises that gave the option to players of how/who they played, and it worked because they were likeable foils to one another's personalities, AND IMPORTANTLY, both equally capable in all areas, with minor differences that gave only minimal advantages to one playstyle or the other.

  6. they made an Assassin's Creed game and created a playable character that is basically just a tank – completely antithetical to the entire game's point. At least they had the brains to include one character that might make the game playable.

  7. Ever since I played the very first Assassin's Creed game, I had hoped for one that would be set in feudal Japan as it made the most sense for the franchise. Fast forward to the early previews and reviews of this game and it's all just a disappointing mess. Ubisoft basically saw the successes of Ghost Of Tsushima and said "yeah, we want some of that in our game as well"… except that their implementation is bad and it essentially clashes with the core of an AC game.

  8. I'd have liked to see the skill trees because they sucked in Valhalla but were superb in Odyssey especially after the add-ons to give you alternates to the standard ones. The skill system in Mirage was absolute ditch water and despite playing it a couple of times I'm still waiting for the rest of the game, it just seemed to stop after 25 hours or so whereas Odyssey I've replayed 20 times and it just keeps giving with builds and fighting styles.

  9. Just wanted to come back and say who bright idea thought it will be cool for them to limit yasuke parkour he seem like he could be a cool ass character but all my excitement went out the window when I find out that his parkour is very limited like what was the purpose of adding him if I can’t climb or do some decent stealth with him all I gotta say is my hard earned is not going to ubislop I waited 17 years literally 17 years to live out my fantasy to free run with a samurai this was not how the game was pose to lunch everything is ruined

  10. You say it yourself: I´m not the target audience for these kind of games.
    Cool, thanks for the review.

    One thing:
When I watch your reviews I don´t recognize a real structure. You are spending way too much time especially on one big thing you don´t like throughout half of the video.
Is it really that hard to explain some objective things first? Like how much you were able to see from that game.
I know that you could only play one region, I know that you weren´t able to play many things related to story, I know that you were somewhat gated in that test. How do I know? Because others confirmed the borders of that demo.
So – start with explaining these things so viewers have the opportunity at the start to know what you can really talk about.

I don´t want to defend that game, I don´t want to defend Ubisoft. Maybe Shadows is the weakest game ever.

But I have to say – for someone who didn´t like Origins without explaining why. The best written game in the newer AC games with one of the best protagonists of the whole franchise – I mean, it´s really hard to believe in your expertise.

But – I think you´re right. Ubi should have focus on one character. Not because of the Yasuke-bash, because of focus itself. Delete what isn´t necessary, that´s what art is all about.
