The Sony GDM FW-900 is one of the greatest monitors ever made with its widescreen aspect ratio and an incredibly high rated resolution (for the time) this 20-year-old retro beast puts many modern gaming displays to shame! What makes this thing so special, and why did Linus spend so much money on it?

  1. Something about the depth in the fw900 makes games feel so 3D don’t get me started with anime.. omg it looks so good. Playing dragon quest 11 at 3000×1600 on this thing makes it look like a Pixar movie (200%) super sampling.

  2. CRT monitors also don't mess up your eyes like "modern" monitors. Why would it take 45 minutes to warm up? In my decades on CRTs, I NEVER saw one that took more than a few seconds to warm up.

  3. Sorry for being picky, but this is a Trinitron tube. So it only has 1 electron gun.
The name Trinitron was derived from trinity, meaning the union of three, and tron from electron tube, after the way that the Trinitron combined the three separate electron guns of other CRT designs into one.
Not that it matters much in your case but it makes the explaining animation at the beginning wrong.

  4. When I was a young adult, one of the first things I bought with my hard earned money was a Sony Trinitron CRT TV. It weighed 90lbs, it was a behemoth…. And I’ve never enjoyed an image on any screen so much since. It got left at my parents and sold at some point. I had no idea that image quality would still be playing catch-up this far into the future! I miss that thing. Lights off, Doom 3 running through my 5.1 sound setup…. It was magical

  5. I've had the smaller cousin FP2141SB sitting in my attic for years (similar size but the more typical 4:3 aspect ratio… 1920×1200 capable… MAYBE 1920×1440 I don't think I ever tried)… image quality is really great on those old Trinitron's. I don't even have a card to drive it anymore but I just couldn't bring myself to throw it out.

  6. Just picked up a WEGA Trinitron 36" CRT yesterday, weighs 220lbs! about broke my back, and tried to use a dolly and blew out both tires lol. Absolutely worth the $75USD that I paid for it, plus came with original remote and manual

  7. Believe it or not, I owned FOUR of these at one time. I eventually switched over to LCDs to save space, power and weight, and they went into storage for the next 15 years. Finally my wife convinced me to get rid of them, and I did. Fast forward to three months later when I discovered that they were (at the time) selling for close to $5,000 each online.

  8. What's also extra funny no one notices…. This man does not play Counter-Strike…. You can tell by his movements first of all and the fact that he has never played it online anything he just uses this little setup to manipulate you

  9. I still have one of these monitors. I used it back in the day when I played Quake1/2. I have lugged this thing up hills, multiple flights of stairs, driveways, you name it…when attending various LAN parties. I am shocked to see how much it's worth now and when Linus said $3k was like NFW! Sure enough I see 2 of them on ebay right now, one for $3500 and another for $4500. Insane!
