The other thing to consider with tension is the balance between strings, once I tried d'addario's balanced tension sets I haven't gone back. The B string in particular feels out of place on most standard sets once your used to balanced tension.
put this bit on rechargeable screw drive,
Your kid is too cute and "G'car" just kills me! 🤘😄
The drill winder works much better with an electric screwdriver. It's lighter, far less awkward, and less torque (especially if it has an adjustable clutch) and less risk of snapping a string or something worse from a full-blown drill, which is just overkill.
My daughter has muscle weakness so putting 8s on her Tele was a must for reducing string tension for easier playability for her.
Excellent helper !! And yes, I use the peg winder with every string change.
@johnnathancordy Interesting suggestions, and a lovely visit today by your expert assistant! Could you comment please on the impact of string gauge differences on sound (as opposed to just bending)?
No, no. You’re supposed to use it with a powered screwdriver, which winds much slower and with much less torque. That way, it becomes much more useful (and less scary!)
The Silver Sky has locking tuners. The string winder makes a lot more sense on normal tuners.
😅
The little curly one 😎
Crazy dude using a drill instead of an electric screw driver haha Made for a great video tho ¯_(°°)_/¯
It is really good
I still use one of those cheap plastic string winders. I guess if I was a luthier or tech, one of these would be useful.
I’ve never been in such a hurry that I needed even a hand held string winder. Never mind a drill mounted one.
String tension is a function of "string length," the distance between the fixed points on the guitar. This is usually the Tuners, and where the Ball Ends are on the Bridge. So, the Headstock Tuner arrangement, and Bridge design – Tremolo, Trapeze, Stop Tailpiece, all contribute to the how much tension needs to be applied to raise the string to a specific pitch.
If the string gauge, design, and materials are all the same, it takes more tension to bring a longer "string length" up to the same pitch. This can be compensated for by increasing the string gauge and construction, as can be seen on the 6th and 1st strings. You could tune the 1st strings down to the same pitch as the low E string, but it would be very floppy and almost inaudible, and unplayable.
I use that all the time. I dont use it on a drill, but rather an electric screwdriver since it has far less power. Works like a charm
Love the kiddo! She should be part of every intro! Also, as others have said, the winder is intended for wireless screwdrivers not drills. I use one one my guitars without locking tuners. Great time saver.
The drillbit thingy works better on one of the electric screwdrivers rather than a full size drill. If your drill has a low speed selection you'll want to switch to that first.
Ellie already speaking with an English accent will never not be funny and that she already knows how to say “guitah!” 😂 and answering to John’s talking to himself in front of a camera
Use that drill bit peg winder with a rechargeable screwdriver instead of your drill. LEss powerful (so safer) and lighter and easier to handle too.
Turn the torque collar, man…the black ring between the chuck and the green part of the body. It's there to limit the amount of torque the thing puts out.
The only constant is the tension on the B string is the lowest and usually by a significant amount. It must be something people want even if they don't know it. Otherwise balanced sets would be more balanced. I'm holding out for the magical set that is high tension for the picking hand and low tension for the fretting hand.
Drill Bit Peg Winder is a great band name. Even better than Relic Of Decay.
Love your vids John. You're a monster player and your daughter is adorable. You're a lucky man 😀
When I worked as a guitar tech, this was a lifesaver. Imagine having to do 5-10 (and more sometimes) restrings daily (in addition to other tasks). Obviously, you need to be pretty careful with this tool, but once you get used to it, it's really good.
Now you just need to attach some picks to it, Paul Gilbert style!
Please clip those strings first. You're gonna lose an eye….
Keeping up with the Cordy’s
What about a cup a tea dad?…or 3?
I use it with a power screw driver, much slower turning, and it’s been helpful. ✌️😌🎸
D'Addario makes a specific balanced tension variant of some of their sets. I use the NYXL BT 9-40. I like them a lot. Does it make a huge difference compared to normal 9-46? No. But some. They're a tad more expensive but I've got good skin chemistry so they last years so I won't go bankrupt from this.
I've seen a few repair guys using DeWalt gyroscopic drills with string winder attachments. I guess they change a lot of strings, but their gear is really cool.
Seems like a great way to wear/damage your tuners … maybe with something lower power, but … nah, I’m good/not that lazy …
