Keith from @five watt world asked if Iโ€™d record some music for his โ€œThe Guitars of Eric Johnsonโ€ last week, and so I tried to fit in some time to try and do my third rate impression of my favourite guitaristโ€ฆHereโ€™s a little bit about how I first heard of Eric, and my favourite albums and moments!

The presets Iโ€™m using here will be added to the expression folder โ€œEricFreezeโ€ and โ€œEricLead35 (general folder)

  1. Eric has definitely been my favorite guitar player too for quite a while. It was Satriani before that, like you stated. Eric has the best tone in my opinion. Both his clean and distorted tones. I remember right after that G3 tour VHS and CD, there was a Christmas CD that came out called โ€˜Merry Axemasโ€™ I believe. A lot of great guitar players on it including Vai, Satriani and in my opinion the best song on that album was Eric. Ah Via Musicom is hard to beat as an album, especially with Cliffs of dover on it. The whole album is awesome, much like Venus isle, but I think it is a bit better than Venus isle. Very close together in my opinion. As with what you stated, that was the same year I really heard Eric play and loved his guitar playing and tone. Would love that 54โ€™master built โ€˜Virginiaโ€™ EJ strat signature series.

  2. The Eric Johnson G3 was the first and original line up. All the other line ups came after.
I first came across Eric from a VHS tape of that G3 concert in the late 90s. Still have the tape somewhere.
I bought Venus Isle somewhere around 1998/99

  3. Wanna play like Eric..? I would say, in a fit of opportunism, go and buy the EBay โ€˜mega-bundleโ€™ of all the EJ tuition material (DVDs & tab books) Iโ€™ve owned over the years!!!

Or you can do what I do and just be a Patreon of John cause he explains stuff better than Eric (which is why Iโ€™m selling). ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. I suspect, like many guitarists, the first time I heard EJ was Cliffs of Dover. I was transfixed by what I was hearing. That was followed by purchasing Ah Via Musicom. The opening instrumental track is fantastic, and is one of the most memorable of all he's wonderful playing.

It's good to hear you regularly on Five Watt World. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

  5. Really, really fine playing in this one, John. Yes, the Eric J influence is really strong in these bits. But congrats on not just copying him, but integrating him into your own thing. Because the person you most sound like here is… John Cordy. A good thing! โ€”Tom PS: I've been listening to Eric since Tones came out, and I probably agree with you about Venus Isleโ€”a fantastic album! Though I like the solos in "When the sun meets the sky" a bit better than those in "Lonely in the night," only because of the joyfulness of the lines in "When the sun"โ€”it's like a celebration. The only reason I said "I probably agree" is because "Forty mile town" is on Ah Via Musicom. ๐Ÿ˜Ž
