  1. Love the big intervallic jumps at the start of the lead in the intro. I'd love to see a video on melodic use of big intervals. That's something I really love in the playing of Phil Keaggy and Eric Johnson, but I haven't really broken the code on how to make it work with my own improvisation (apart from just quoting them!). —Tom

  2. That "flatter" behavior over time is what sold me as a beta tester of Elixir's acoustic guitar strings (back in the day, they reached out to contributors to the RMMGA Usenet newsgroup to act as beta testers). Elixirs sound like strings that are a few hours to a day old, but then they sound that way for weeks or months, depending on how much you play. If you're like me—a non-pro player who can't justify the expense and bother of frequent string changes—coated strings are a no-brainer. But explore the options. The original Elixirs had a thick coating that was highly protective but impacted the tone a bit more than many of us RMMGA players liked. Elixir soon came out with Nanowebs, a thinner coating that struck a more perfect balance (including being just slippery enough to reduce but not eliminate string squeaks on acoustic). I'm curious how D'Addario's coated strings compare. I see they have a phosphor bronze set for acoustic; for me coated strings make the biggest difference on acoustic, so I'd like to check those out. —Tom

  3. I've never liked coated strings, and play D'Addario exclusively, but I tried a set of 80/20 XS on my acoustic at the start of August and they still sound sparkly. I play it every day, and I usually have to change 80/20s after a couple hours, Phos Bronze about 2 weeks. I wipe my strings when I put the guitar away. I'm sold because although they're more expensive this set has achieved affordable longevity.

  4. Non coated strings corrode in two days for me, other coated strings corrode the unwound strings in less than a week of daily playing, mainly because they don't treat them in any way, the daddario XS you show here lasted a week for me and was the second longest lasting. Elixirs last for more than 6 months of daily playing for me, because they are the only ones that do something to the unwound strings. Even playing non coated strings in my tests, the wound strings never corroded of became dull, its always the unwound strings that become unplayable really fast, so I never understood why every other brand of coated strings ignores them and coats just the strings that don't ever seem to be the problem. Am I the only one that has had this experience? I'd like to know what other people think about this

  5. I was using the Elixirs and switched to their optoweb version which is more of a regular feel, and importantly don’t have those super toxic Teflon forever chemicals. Apparently.

  6. Hey John could you do a spot on your wireless set up? I've tried a couple but they always seem to suck the tone , especially the high end out, compared to the regular cable. I'd be interested in your opinion.

  7. I seem to have very corrosive sweat. Switched to Elixir Nanowebs and have never looked back. Good string cleaning routine and those make them last hours and hours of hard playing longer. I seem to (anecdotally) get less string breaks too!

  8. I hadn't tried coated strings since the original Elixir Polyweb came out and they were awful. My guitar teacher gave me some XS strings recently as I lent him a guitar for a gig, and I didn't even realise they were coated, he had to tell me. The difference is amazing.

  9. I was a ernie ball reg slinky guy for years until I got my revstar with elixir nanowebs on. Convert overnight.

Out of interest, what is the gig bag you pulled out at the start of the video? Looks like just the kind of thing I am after

  10. Have been a fan of Regular Slinkies for years but the cost of replacing them every month for recording adds up. Switched to optiweb or whatever its called. We'll see how they go.

  11. They really do sound better/longer. I love a fresh set of D’Addario (non-coated) strings but they definitely have a short life. It’s like they are pure magic for a day or so then they kind of mellow out and start to sound flatter than coated D’Addarios do from the get go and for quite a while after.

  12. Here is tip to stop strings eroding in guitar cases. You know those little bags of crystals you get when you buy electronic gear? Do not throw them away, instead place one in each of your cases. They absorb moister so your strings will stay as good as new. It costs nothing. The money you save can go toward buying £30 picks…

  13. I tried their XS acoustic strings two years ago and haven’t looked back. Best strings I’ve ever used and for someone who often plays live with acoustic, they last a long time. I only change the strings maybe 2-3x a year now.

  14. I live in South west Florida and its hot and sweaty here for quite a bit. most of my Gigs are outside in open air Tiki Bars.I will play about 5 gigs on my strings before I change them. I did try Elixers once and man they were expensive. After about 5 to 6 shows they felt cashed. But I pushed them another 2 to 3 shows. They just felt terrible and had to change them . That was the last time I bought a set. Some times I will check underneath of the wound G string and If it has dents from the frets I will change them. Pro tip from Tom Bukovac. He says at that point they won’t play in tune.I mean $20 a set at Sweetwater for coated strings. Forget about it…I’m getting my strings, D”Addario ,Martin, AND Ernie Ball for around $6 a set . Im always looking for a deal on them.

  15. Uncoated strings are a complete waste of time, money, and tone for me. I get MAYBE 5-7 hours of play time before they are completely dead. That's about 3 days on my main guitars and a week or 2 on my least played. With 16-ish guitars I felt like changing strings was a part-time job. With coated strings I do my entire collection on my Winter and Summer vacations and that's it. When I do change them they don't even necessarily need a change. No, cleaning before and after playing, putting lube and all the other gaslighting BS guitarists say only gets me an extra hour or 2. Coated is the only way to go in my case. I prefer Elixir Polyweb on some guitars and Optiweb on others. Nanowebs flake so they're Garbage but I like nanoweb on acoustic. The Daddario ones are pretty decent, I was stuck having to use them during the pandemic since Elixirs weren't available. I've been a sucker that listened to people on the internet and tried every brand and type of string. There's no point, I'm sticking to what's worked for me.

  16. I use XS and XT a lot. Super stable tuning wise imo and they last a long time.
I actually don't like the sound of brand new strings, they need a few days to settle it to their tone to me. XS kind of sound the same from day one to day sometime when I somehow want to change them.
