  1. i don't want to be a hater, but games like this just aren't very impressive once you see past the graphics and pretty set pieces. the mediocre writing and combat isn't worth spending 30+ hours on.

  2. Surprised no reviewers have mentioned that God of War Ragnarock might have the single worst quest I have played in an otherwise great game. Every single aspect of the quest is basically a parody of how to make the most miserable quest imaginable. Walk slow, collect useless doodads, every time you think the quest is over you have to go "ride an elevator", "explore the swamp more", "collect some roots". Existing in a game like God of War just makes the horrible tropiness of the quest even more apparent and jarring. Like it's so bad (and easily 1.5-2 hours long) that it kind of a black eye for the game

  3. So the first game is better.. Got it.. Took your time trying to get to the point and trying to not make it the point yet it's there; underneath all that is said and done – The first is the better of the 2 – definitely in terms of story

  4. Didn't want to comment until i'd played it myself.
So GoW Ragnarok for me is a step up visually from the 2018 game. Performance is better – though there are bugs, not many, but more than i thought there would be – on the PS5 it's buttery smooth mostly.
The story and characters are very good and the acting is top draw. The writers managed to really dig deep into the old myths and create a vivid fantasy world.
    That's all the good stuff.
Combat: as basic and tanky as before, no real improvements which is a shame – fights are pretty much controlled by story and also enemies once in an attack or defence animation can't be interrupted. The camera is as janky as before when in combat sadly. The puzzles aren't really puzzles – you already know what to do it's more of a case of looking for a perfect spot to execute the solution which gets old quickly….despite the very impressive visuals alluding to lots of places to go the game is still very linier and restrictive and you can only progress and move a certain way, you can move a little around certain locations to find loot etc; but clever design does hide the fact that the game is quite restrictive mechanically.
As a game with a character driven story it's one of the best of the year, but as an actual game it isn't doing anything new or exciting – just more of what you had in 2018.
I thought the game was flabby with filler content and could have been trimmed down a lot and been much better as there were long periods of hardly any interaction where you just pressed a button every 5 or 10 minutes while watching a very long scene just to remind you it's a game and not a cgi movie.

I enjoyed it for the story telling of Kratos and his ever expanding gang, but after 40 odd hours of quite dull game play at times I was okay with it being done.
A solid 8/10 as it is visually a real treat. But i don't think it's a game that will be redefining anything in the way Elden Ring has redefined the open world genre.

  5. this game actually sucks though.
the movie is good, but the actual game part of this game sucks. Bad. Games aren't movies. A completely linerar story where the player input has no value and the gameplay is mostly mindless and shallow is barely even a game? Why are people so hype about these movie games?

Like, WOW, GAMES CAN BE LIKE MOVIES GUYS!!!! But games are better than movies. They're interactive. They can be so much more than movies. Trying to ape movies is NOT the future of videogames. This is all flash and no substance. EVERY good part of this game would be just as good if it was in a movie. This GAME is bad. The movie and story are good.

  6. It does sound like a better experience than the 1st game however I’m not a fan of the puzzles, level design or battle system in the 1st. It sounds like those are all back. I’ll wait for a sale

  7. This game is so good that I ended up playing it for 6 hours straight yesterday without even realizing it, I was so soaked up in the game and everything that I completely forgot about what time it was. It wasnt until my brother called me that I realized that it was nearly midnight. I looked at my phone and thought the clock was wrong. We need more games this good, why the hell have we not had great story driven games like this lately, what happened to creativity and making us engaged in the characters and world.

  8. Are we not going to talk about the fact that Atreus is telling you how to solve every single puzzle before you even have the chance to try solving it? A "No hint feature" would be greatly appreciated

  10. Playing Ragnarok at the moment now. It's a masterpiece of a game. A true 10/10. I have very few nitpicks, but it's an absolutely mind-boggingly good game. God of War 2018 on the other hand was a 8/10 for me. Still a great game, but not amazing and sure as hell not a masterpiece. Ragnarok on the other hand? It's something special. It clears up pretty much all of the gripes I had with the first game from 2018 and it adds a ton on top of that. And in hindsight I feel even stronger about my original 8/10, because if God of War Ragnarok is a 10/10, then God of War 2018 can't have the same score.

  11. Odin took me straight out of it. I normally like it when its so easy to recognise an actor in a game, but I don't expect a Meyer Lansky performance in Norse Mythology. I was waiting for him to talk about how he needs a cushion for his tuches after schlepping across the nine realms & start calling Kratos a putz and a mishuggeneh and telling him there's a price to pay for his chutzpah.
His first appearance was so period NY gangster recruitment, I was expecting him to demand Kratos join Thor as his leg breaker to pay of his gambling markers.

Let go of the controller because I am over this game being just 15 minutes in,… AND GUESS WHAT?
The game blocked all on its own.
I am DONE with god of war!
    Done!!!

  13. I was able to softlock pretty early on. If you get the interact option for some objects from a distance it will teleport you there. I went through a breakable but only one way barrier by interacting with a translation statue through the floor.

  14. You should probably disclose that you're literally friends with people who were on the dev team, especially when you can see several glitches in your game footage despite your raving about how good it is…

  15. I can't believe this was built during last gen. Not solely for next generation consoles….
I'm personally so hyped for Callisto protocol. Glen Schofield is a game design god. Just like the lead game dev on God of War. They are 2 rare talented individuals who also know how to put together a good team.
