This week I explored the idea of introducing zombies to the simulated procedural game world I’m building for my indie roguelike game. It honestly wasn’t a huge amount of effort, this is why I love the idea of developing games with a complex simulated world, similar to dwarf fortress. You simply add a new system, define some rules, and if you’ve built the world intelligently up to that point, it just works, and more importantly, the results can entertain you as a developer because things can happen that you didn’t intend.

Next I’d like to add complexity to the A.I. by giving them scheduled tasks and varying their response to other NPCs and crimes they witness. I’d also like to see what happens when another faction is added to the mix, how does it play out when a zombie outbreak is spreading at the same time bandits are attacking? What happens if the villagers can afford to hire a local band of mercenaries? What if there are other creatures that don’t like zombies, but are themselves immune? What if giant ogres or golems could collapse buildings? What if vampires are hiding amongst the villagers? Would it race alarms if the undead aren’t interested in eating them? It’s only going to get more and more interesting.

I plan on developing this game for a very long time. I’d like it to be one of those games that comes out and still constantly gets new content added to it. What will separate me from traditional developers is that I don’t need to be worried about profit, so I don’t need to churn out new games every couple years. I can work on this game for decades, something a AAA company wouldn’t dream of doing. If you want to support me, it’s completely free, just like, comment, subscribe or share the video. It costs you nothing and it means everything to me, thanks.

  1. So basically I was in VR and I saw this video, so I started watching it and was like "This is cool," so than I had a big hassle trying to watch in to my pc, (it was worth it). Also I agree with pretty much all the comments, so read them and you'll get my opinion too. Also am I nuts for thinking that the body part at 4:08 knocking open the door is for some reason really cool.

  2. Awesome work!
Although, if you are going to have zombies, I want to see "zombie crafting" . . . That's something that most of the games out there currently lack.
For example, if I have a zombie and some bandages, I should be able to create a mummy.
Or, if I have a zombie and a box of nails, I should be able to create Pin-head.
