I have a theory for why Byzantium fell. I have observed that when the only province of a duke is taken, his duchy falls apart. It may be the same with larger titles. If the Byzantine Emperor only holds one county and that county is taken, but not his empire title, the empire will simply dissolve.
I love how, while the Holy Roman Empire casually picks up the pieces of a fractured Byzantium, the Armenians are the closest to reuniting the Empire

Laith you should start using 'appoint local noble' for random inconsequential county titles. I believe it gives u prestige and summons a character for free so you arent losing potential courtiers (only really for kings as u can lose the counts under dukes)
