I played Final Fantasy XVI (and interviewed Yoshi-P!) – Hands on Impressions

I flew to Tokyo to meet the senior development team of Final Fantasy XVI and play the game for myself! This is a wildly ambitious title that looks to challenge every expectation and assumption of what a Final Fantasy game should be, and so far I’m absolutely loving it.

  1. Not judging the game but it does not bode well when the director of the game is saying essentially "we must make the franchise fresh by copying other modern action games." That's not how you innovate.

  2. I wanted to be excited for this, but as a fan of character action, cooldowns are the absolute bane of style and flow. They engender waiting for the opportunity to do something, rather than making that opportunity yourself. And here, that clearly remains the same thus far. It's waiting for them to end to do something major, and no amount of "expanding the rotation" can fix that fact. It doesn't reward good and active play like they claim to want, it rewards stalling and passivity.

I'm not looking for "patience" in combat like this, I'm looking for pressure. The only reason to maintain pressure like this is so you can whittle away before your next big move. It's the core reason I just cannot enjoy FFXIV or any other mmo since they insist on cooldowns and waiting instead of balancing via a pool you pull from or building things back up with excellent play. I want to be rewarded for playing well with all of my tools, not the other tools just being something to fiddle with til the actual valuable stuff is ready. I'm worried I'm gonna play this and just absolutely hate it like I have with other action games using cooldowns per move. Even a shared pool like Wirebugs lets me have choice and ATB Gauge filled via time and continuing your assault. It was a cherry on top for doing well, not something you had every little bit after waiting.

Tl;dr: cooldowns are about waiting, not acting, and really work against real-time action.

  3. This insight into the game made me go from nearly 0 interest in Final Fantasy 16 to VERY interested. I'm exactly the audience Yoshi-P was speaking to: I used to be a very avid Final Fantasy fan, but everything since about 11/12 has disappointed me for one reason or another, and I've felt the franchise has squandered a lot of its former legacy. I haven't even bothered with the FFVII remake thus far. But this feels like an experience I could absolutely have a good time with. I am cautiously interested.

  4. Edit: for those looking for the Q&A with YoshiP on his take on the term JRPG it at 27:55 and has no spoilers

I’m not surprised about how YoshiP reacted to the term JRPG I was around when the term was first coined. Now you have to understand that this was the beginning of the HD era of gaming during the Xbox 360. Back than the 360 was the “early” rpg machine with games like Blue Dragon, Lost Oddysey, and Tales Of Vesperia. The 360 was very popular back than and Microsoft made moves to acquire a Japanese audience. The problem was for as many good JRPGs that we saw there were a lot very generic games with very cliche stories and characters. Back than JRPG was term used by critics to insult the style but nobody can accurately define the term as the distinction is very blurry. I think the term really stood out when Final Fantasy XIII released along with Star Ocean 5 (ironically both games published by Square Enix they were a big player at that time they were looked to as the ones who would lead the Japanese developers into HD era) and it was being compared with its western contemporaries of that time Elder Scrolls, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect. Here are these adult “western” narratives that allow me to role play and JRPGs appeal to kids/teenagers and are about the magic of friendship. It really is a case of people growing up honestly at least to me. Now the closest term to that style outside of JRPG I’ve heard is console style rpg a game designed, streamlined, and made to run on consoles and their hardware. This makes sense when you look at games like Dragon Quest in fact if you want to understand the evolution of the genre look at Dragon Quest it basically is the history of that genre. However as of now that term is outdated as many JRPGs are now on PC so it’s moot the term has stuck around ever since within western games media.

    Edit: added more context

  5. It is very strange to hear that my favorite video game genre's title can be a negative to those that create those games. I am unsure what to do with that information. I have a ton of respect for both the games that make up the genre and the creators themselves… and I have no idea how else to refer to them. It's a very interesting perspective to learn about.

  6. They need to go back to turn based. It won't happen, but that's what needs to happen. Dragon quest kept to their roots, and they do great and feel great. It's a shame that final fantasy turned out this way. FF7 remake doesn't cut it either. Such a fucking shame.

  7. I think yoshi should respect the term JRPG more because ever since they tried to westernise the series it has gone severely downhill. FF15 the massive elephant in the room.

It's ironic considering he wants the series to be a must play again but the last game from FF that was a must play was universally known as a JRPG and no one in the western world seen that as a problem. Infact I'd argue the complete opposite that it was a compliment.

20+ years as a western JRPG fan here and this is the first time I've heard of that being seen as a discriminatory term.

  8. "This is a full-on, real-time action game!"
    Me: Deletes game from wishlist

I'm sure this is great for a lot of people, but I really like turnbased combat as well as FFVII Remake's combat system and dislike combat like in DMC or Bayonetta. Seems like this has to be a pass for me.

  9. Shame that this game won't be out on PC for a while. Gonna be a long wait for sure bit I bet it'll be worth it. Look forward to trying this game out when that time comes.

  10. The comments of fossilised gameplay really made me think of what has happened with pokemon. That game franchise is stagnating and rotinng.
Still make tons of money though, cause it's pokemon.

  11. Hey Skill Up, I just wanted to say it's been amzing seeing you grow from somebody jsut talking about the Divison 2, to know getting to play what could be one of the biggest games in the world before the general public. You're my go to reviewer and I just want to say congrats and you deserve all the love and praise you get!

  12. Fossilised? The last 3 games in the main series have been action RPGs. Many if not all random expansion games and the FF7 remake have been action games. This Yoshi P not only insults his playerbase demeans them and dishonours them he flaunts it like an arrogant child. I'm 4mins in and this video has gone from making me hyped for a game to making me angry for another arrogant narrcistic creator who thinks he knows better.

Let's see what the next 20mins holds.

  13. With every minute I watched this, honestly, Final Fantasy XVI became more uninteresting to me. The term JRPG exists at least for 30 years now, but probably Yoshi-P isn't exactly a fan, so why should he know. What these people don't get… if "western players" want to play a western arpg, they have plenty of options to do so. Nobody needs Final Fantasy for that and therefor nobody should need to turn a beloved JRPG series into an ARPG. Unlike you really hate "typical JRPG elements", it doesn't really make any sense – and if you really hate these things – maybe you shouldn't produce a mainline singleplayer game of a long-established JRPG franchise. So, yeah, I guess the production value of this game will be top notch, as usual… but everything else sounds worse than "Stanger Of Paradise" (and at least that was only a spin-off). At this point, I just don't care anymore. Have fun trying to sell that stuff to people who would rather be playing GTA but for some reason won't anyway, if that is your "broaden our market"-strategy is.

  14. Makes sense why he doesn't like the term JRPG but I'm still going to use it. JRPG isn't a diss to me. It's just another type of RPG that other places can't quite make. I think there is just something about Japanese culture and their take on things that make the games very captivating.

  15. I don't think he should have felt offended at all I mean even if Japanese do not use the term JRPG themselves which isn't true but even if it was. When Western audience first started using the term it was to distinguish JRPGs from KRPGs or Korean RPGs and in my mind at least that was always a compliment to the JRPG that was what we wanted when we got a new turn-based RPG game that your friend told you about you wanted to make sure it was a JRPG not a KRPG cuz those sucked lol

  16. I still feel like JRPGs is a whole or like 1 to 2 generations in the past at all times they stayed in the purely turn-based combat for years and years after other games were doing it different they're just now bringing in full action gameplay which feels almost two generations old at this point going back to the days of like God of war 1 and 2 and devil May Cry 1 through 3 which came out the beginning of the PS3 era. I mean if they were going to jump from turn-based or ATB to full action combat I would have much prefer to see them fully jump to something like the Witcher 3. Like this still feels super dated but with a graphical fidelity equal to what we get nowadays but with world design and combat that looks like something from 10 years ago still

  17. They need to ground the series. Everyone looks like they just got off a super model walkway, the acting is typical anime over exaggerated garbo, and the stories are cliched with little to no subtextual storytelling.

  18. This term JRPG has been out for more than 15 years. I remember when the first Final Fantasy was release for the Nintendo back in 1990 I called, it a "JPRPG" because my classmates didn't understand what type of game it was. It was a RPG game that was made in Japan. Its just like All Japan Pro Wrestling, you don't hear anyone in Japan complaining that its supposed to be called, "Wrestling". Plus they are not the only company in Japan that makes JRPGS.

To me a JRPG is a turn based story game that you play multiple characters and classes and venture all over THE WORLD leveling up skill and abilities. Plus JRPGS doesn't need to be teenagers saving the world. Look at Lost Odyssey. An RPG is you use ONE character who can learn multiple classes Ex: Elden Ring, Skyrim. Action/Adventure games are The Legend of Zelda and God of War. Final Fantasy Tactics is a Tactical Role playing game no one calls it a JTRPG. Final Fantasy 16 is an MMORPG not an MMOJRPG. Plus Metroid Prime was an FPS game and no one called it an "JFPS". JRPG's have an esthetic play style that makes it unique to all other genres. In addition, no other country in the world makes these types of game. Period.

So because he was offended with the term JRPG he removed all gameplay aspects in what makes a JRPG from his vision so that it cant be labelled as an JRPG. Well guess what, now he should feel offended because this game doesn't even come close to an RPG. This game is a Action/Adventure/hack and slash/Beat 'em up game. They acknowledged that the only character you get to use is Clive (the dog doesn't count.) So this automatically removes it from being an RPG and more of an Adventure game like The Legend of Zelda, Hack and slash elements from Devil May Cry and beat 'em up elements like Azuras Wrath. This gameplay has so many quick time events that I thought I was going to get PTSD like I did playing Azuras Wrath. Holy shit. They don't even let you fight the boss with out a damn quicktime event popping up ever minute or so.

I wonder what the next offensive thing going to be? Manga or Anime?

  19. I remember square declining the pitch for Xenogears as a mainline final fantasy title because of its "dark" story.
Now they are going in this route for a final fantasy title. Damn.
