I Fixed Resident Evil 6's Story

Resident Evil 6 released in 2012 and went down in history as ‘the bad entry’ in the franchise. After the success of Resident Evil 5, an all co-op game with four campaigns featuring some of your favorite Resident Evil veterans like Leon Kennedy, Chris Redfield, Ada Wong and Sherry Birkin pulling from the history connected to other games and hours longer than any other – seemed like a sure thing.

But years later, this game has developed a fan base who think it’s good – really good! So what happens in Resident Evil 6? Where does it take place? Why did it fail to impress on release, and now that Capcom is remaking the Resident Evil series…would they remake Resident Evil 6?

Join me as we review all four campaigns and see how they could have been written to make a greater impact on the audience. I’ve done the impossible, I Fixed Resident Evil 6’s Story.

  1. Hey, I know it's only a campy video game story, and obviously the situation isn't exactly the same with Jake but when it comes to his anger at Chris over the wesker thing, speaking as someone who never met their 'real' father but also grew up being told he was a massive asshole, and was then years later informed that said father was dead? There's a lot of conflicting, harsh feelings that come of it. The idea of even if they're a terrible person being told you'll NEVER get a chance to know them for yourself and pass your own judgement, never find out from their words why they decided not to be there to raise you, and having any opportunity to ever have that figure in your life taken away is a lot. If you were directly told the person who robbed you of all of these chances and personal closure is standing RIGHT in front of you? Yeah, lashing out at them is very reasonable.

  2. I fixed the story too, just remove the Jake hating Chris storyline. It makes absolutely no sense, Jake went from not knowing who his father was to finding out that his dad was a terrorist trying to destroy the world and he’s upset that Chris killed him? Like what? When I first played it that literally made me hate the character and hoped they never brought him back.

  3. Considering 6 is (arguably) really the only bad entry in the mainline series, it’s the only one I think would benefit from big structural changes rather than technological updates.
Really hope some writer at Capcom sees this video and gives it some thought at least.
Also pickle. Great work on this video man. An hour of content and not a minute of it feels like fat that’s needed to be trimmed. You’ve really got a knack for this stuff

  4. It's so silly how RE's wacky to begin with story still ended up losing the plot. I thought this was a really good way to fix the problems without completely overhauling the story. Also, pickle.

  5. I’ve heard Re9 could have the world turned into a post apocalyptic setting. Would be a great way to bring about the main cast back into the picture who haven’t seen for a while aside from Chris.

  6. My idea was totally different from yours – it was more narrative-based while you actually delved deep into the motives and picked them apart to create a thematically consistent story.

Instead of four campaigns, I would have done one giant campaign with four viewpoints, and the story would have been the climax of the entire Progenitor Virus Myth Arc up to this point, tying up all the loose ends and featuring as many returning characters as possible. The last third of the story would have been heavily revised, and all the characters would have reunited at a coastal Neo-Umbrella base close to the city for the final battle, where Leon and Chris would have learned the truth about Carla (Jake would have still been captured, though). Meanwhile, other BSAA teams, including one led by Jill (with potentially other characters from the Revelations games) would have been sent into Tatchi to contain the outbreak with assistance from TerraSave, but they won't be the focus of the story.

Back at the base, Simmons would have been revealed to have followed everyone there and would have fought Leon, Ada and Helena as Chris and Piers head down into an underwater part of the base to rescue Jake and Sherry. But Ada is separated from the others by Carla, who infects herself with the C-Virus to give her an edge. Ada still kills her, then returns to help Leon and Helena. An earlier version of the story had Carla merging with Haos, but I eventually discarded it because it was too much.

Below the surface, the same thing plays out as in the original game, Piers dies saving Chris while Ustanak is killed by Jake and Sherry. The three survivors then escape via various methods and reunite on the surface just in time to be picked up by the BSAA, Leon and Helena.

In the aftermath, Jake cooperates with the BSAA and a vaccine for the C-Virus is created and distributed (ironically by air dispersal into the atmosphere), which can neutralize the Progenitor Virus at its most basic level. In return, he takes on a new identity, while Sherry spends some time with Leon and Helena (and maybe Claire too). Chris continues fighting in the BSAA alongside Jill and his team, maybe he meets up with Barry, Rebecca and Sheva, and as per the late president's wishes, the details of the Raccoon City Incident are declassified, putting a final nail in the coffin for Umbrella. As for Ada, she destroys all traces of Carla's work and watches over Leon from afar, knowing that he's finally moved on from her.

It's not perfect, but it's a pretty basic idea that was basically created out of the fact that I was just tired of seeing a neverending story where no one really wins. At some point, I just wanted the story to end, and this was it. What do you think?

    1. one place as setting, lets say china or tall oaks – preferably the Jake's home country. No 6 months break, takes place over 24 hours or few days max.
    2. rather then show other point of view of same events, they all act as direct sequels to each other – similar to Revelations 1 and 2
    3. all pairs interact at some point but their stories work as stand alone, with alteration to game play
    4. "Puppet master" is mysterious villain (Carla) Simmons appears as good guy, guiding all groups, basically second Hunningan.
    5. A) Jake is tracking his father (we don't know its Wesker) Sherry is helping out in exchange of vaccine. Ends with Sherry convincing Jake to rescue civilian (Helena's sister) from Puppet Master rather then getting what he wants. — ditch Ushtanak, no access to guns, melee survival horror,
    B) Helena has been Leon's partner for a while, she asks him to rescue her sister, in finale they meet with Jake and Sherry, trying to save Helena's sister, with Ada's help. Carla is relieved as Puppet Master, she is not clone but hates Ada and Simmons. Group manages to call for help to BSAA, but afterwards Leon and Jake have a moment, its implied Leon realized who is Jake's father and fears confrontation with Chris — mix of horror and gun-play, similar to RE4 and revelations games.
    C) Criss and Piers arrive, Carla murders their team with traps, Simmons accuses Ada, claiming she is Carla's hench-woman (seems legit from their point of view). After all 3 teams meet, conflict arises. Chris wants to kill Ada, Jake wants to kill Chris. Like you said in your version, Jake becomes mirror for Chris and he calms down. Leon helps them find common ground, he is the one who sais he fought Sherry's father, and she is nothing like him. Teaming up the 6 (with Hunnigans help) realizes Simmons is real villain. Obsessed with Carla who "betrayed him." Boss fight with Simmons, finale with all 6 heroes, fate of Ada is unknown. — With this being act 3 all hell broke loose and Chris with Pierce fight hordes of enemies, game-play based on opening parts of RE5. Still horror, but more "fear of the horde"
    D) Ada's story is build like longer version of separate ways, only one that is parallel to others, Ada was hired by Simmons to take down Carla, but after that would mean Leon's dead she joined heroes instead. Ada's story goes few minutes longer after Chris's when she confronts dying Carla who confesses that she and Simmons were once in love, but Carla was determined to bring his organization down and this was the only way. Carla even sais that she knows Ada is just a mercenary and is sorry she was dragged into this. Carla took over Simmons base, Helena's sister was already held there, Carla needed Jake's blood to destroy Simonns' virus. Carla even hoped to use Jake's blood to cure Helena's sister and other victims but she was too late. Carla does win, and she is covert hero (anti-villain) of the story. Ada gives comfort to Carla and tells her "consider it professional courtesy. Neo umbrella is going down." — stealth, gadgets, trickery.
