I build a commander deck from scratch! Several people have asked about how we build new EDH decks for every Quintessential Commander and I thought Iβd document my ENTIRE deckbuilding process. This entire recording took over 2 hours and itβs only the first draft of the deck.
This Zur Eternal Schemer deck eventually went in an enchantment-beatdown style deck with some life-matters synergy.

Disclaimer: there are actually an infinite number of steps because deck-building is a never-ending process π
Loving it man to see what's behind the scenes when everyone shares their ideas on deckbuilding and reasons behind it βΊοΈ
Love learning how folks build their decks!
This was cool – thanks.
Love the content that you put out and the commander games recorded – I recently got back into MTG and took my baby steps into EDH a few months back so this is really timely. (Also, I got like 3 more or else done decks and have another 2 in progress so I am well on my way to cardboard hell once again)
Righteous Aura would be a good one to protect you from the always attacking Matthew π
Alseid of Life's Bounty to protect your commander and Solitary Confinement is a funny one too(specially in a tight game!)
Quintessential MTG become my favorite channel! Love from Brazil π
I'm sorry I have to ask. I'm like 2 minutes into the video, do you not use dark mode on Moxfield?? Or did you just not use dark mode for this video?
i really like the video. can you maybe explain more how you guys get such a similar power level. thats what I like the most about you videos. it is so balanced, which makes it so cool, and oyu gyus obviously
If you're leaning into the lifegain aspect I really think Daxos would be a good include. Plus the token creating enchantments are just so much extra value for you just for playing the theme of the deck. Personal opinion though.
Its interesting to see how a deck can get constructed and be functional immediately.
I usually get a commander, look in my trunk of spares and just throw anything and everything in the deck. Then slowly over time ill improve it. My gitrog deck used to be just all my green and black cards but slowly its built really good synergy and keeps up with all the players who can afford to play and buy cards more regularly than me
As someone who takes weeks just to get a functional deck to play with (not including moding stages after play testing, I greatly appreciate this video.
This was really fun thank you! Love watching people deckbuild, always an informative process π keep up the fun videos
Interesting to learn how other people build their decks. Nice content!
Hey Esmond,
On moxfield you can search with the scryfall syntax.
Just 1 click and the card ist in the deck π
Nice to see your "uncut" deck building processes and hear your thoughts and desicions. Very insightful π
Keep up the great content!
This is awesome, thank you Esmond π
Everyone usually "only" shows the finished list, but this right here, is a powermove in my book!
Itβs impressive how efficiently you use scryfall. Can you not do all that in moxfield since itβs powered by scryfall?
It would have taken me 10+ hours to do all that π
This was a great watch! If you're doing interviews I definitely want Paul to be first and Yang Ling second, those two guys always bring really interesting decks to the match.
Also, kudos on your impressive Scryfall skills; when I brew I have to go to advanced search every 15 seconds like a pleb -_-0
This was such a great video. Thank you for sharing your brewing process, Esmond!
I do have a suggestion with the protection aspect of the deck: maybe you'd want to include something like a Swiftfoot Boots or a Champion's Helm? Or if you wanted to get some value out of enchantment-based synergies, I might suggest a Diplomatic Immunity.
i need to learn how to use scryfall
Excited when I saw this post – I appreciated hearing your perspectives and I excited for the new direction of this channel. π
Could run Mother of Runes/Giver of Runes to try to keep Zur safe, Spellskite for additional protection and cut out a bit of the enchantments to do so; all in all, great video – love the process and the "behind the scenes" look at how you build a deck
Robe of the archmagi would be a fun card for card draw if youβre going for combat. Also for extra protection plus enchantment I always love kayas ghostform. One mana and protects from exile too. Awesome video man. Would love to see the same with a budget in mind. Like 200 or something.
Clearly you need to interview The Chosen One and The Faceless One.
Great video!
Cool video! Always fun to see someone else's perspective and thought process when building decks! Would love to see Matt explain his process when building mono-red decks! π
Let's do a budget deck building next time
Really like this video, and yeah, get all the regulars in for deckbuilding interviews! They all bring such unique styles.
Must be nice when you dont have a budget D:
