  3. Not a bad old bus really, luckily the fuel injection work had been done (not heard of that problem before), and hope the timing chain hangs on for a while. The newer B57 engine ~2015 onwards is anecdotally a better engine and more reliable, and still a peach to drive. Would quite like a G30 530d personally as a great all rounder.

My only BMW was an E46 330i, owned up until 175,000 miles and the good thing about it was that whatever went wrong, it only cost £200 in parts to fix maximum, I did all the the work myself. I think it always takes BMW a couple of generations to iron out the bugs with their new engine tech. (and others too), such as direct injeciton petrols and the common rail Diesels. With the newest engines they have probably hit the sweet spot. N52 petrol old school was perfect apparently, but with direct injection and turbos the N53, N4 and N55 were all flakey imho., and the N57 Diesels and the 4 pots loved to eat timing chains (and apparently fuel pumps according to this video). Then they ironed out the bugs and introduced the B series petrol and Diesel engines.

It's a shame, 6 pots and combustion engine days are probably numbered but the latest ones are probably peak ICE. Currently drive a 2016 Mini 3 pot with the B38 and it's peppy and only minor trim issues so far with the car, overall it feels rock solid, like a much bigger car. Not too exciting but good enough on the backroads, a remap will give it the extra 20% it needs to be quite fun.

  4. Great video Matt, quick question though – the car verticle checks you do as you pull up I understand is post-purchase? Do you do a check before you buy, or are you genuinely surprised by the returns it comes up with? Cheers!

  5. We had the 535i GT here in Australia with exactly the same roof issue. We had BMW rectify once out of warranty, and after that we just decided never to open it again to be on the safe side. Living in Australia the blind was an absolute necessity.

It was the most magnificent car, it was great on long highway runs and surprisingly efficient, but it was like a whale to park, gutter rash was our arch nemesis, and all in all as 2 men and 2 small dogs we didn't get the use out of it we could have, given it was used as a work commuter and the odd run to Brisbane.

5 years and 60,000km later we traded it on a 440i … whomever bought that GT got a great car.

  6. I’ve always found the GT an acquired taste even for a 5 series lover like me. It shouts “caravan lover” to me. It would also be good to know what you actually sell it for in an update video.

  9. Well done Matt, IMO the blind removal was a sensible and fair choice on a $10k car, not corner cutting. I think you are very honest and honourable from all the evidence on here! those who doubt that expect something for nothing and do not understand secondhand cars. I've never been a fan of the look of the GT, but I have to say, as they go, this one looks quite good! I am a fan of the BMW 3.0 6 cyl diesel. I ran a 530d estate for a few years and loved the seamless power deliver and really quite amazing economy (when I wasn't thrashing it!). Great engine!

  10. Always loved these and that's a nice example, I was looking for an estate for practicality running round two huskies, but a dealer had one of these and I was really tempted, then I seen renault had gotten the tracing paper out and created the arkana now I'm not sure!

  14. Hi Matt, your previous review of a 530gt ,made me buy a 630gt m-sport,just as lockdown finished, and it was the best car I have ever owned, never driven an auto box before, and now would never go back to a manual, family problems made me move it on, but now have a bmw active tourer auto, would still love you to do a review of a 630gt, sorry for the late reply but just came back off holiday.

  15. I have 530d GT and have same problem with blind. Luckily mine is not sagging so badly yet. Common issue on them. Only thing in summer with open blind it will get pretty hot. Even with air con running. Definitely need tinting the glass.
