  1. The AFL doesn't have integrity as a competition right now. why is Caro worried about it on this point. The Fixture isn't fair, the umpiring isn't fair, the finals process isn't fair, Gather Round isn't fair, west coast travel isn't fair. The trade process isn't fair. the PSD isn't fair.

  2. So is there a week-to-week draft order? What if a few clubs are hit with injuries in the same area and want to draft the same player in the same week? Is there draft picks involved? Can you only draft a like-for-like player ie; draft a ruckman if your ruckmen are all injured? Is there a cap on how many players you can bring in? Is there a cap on total list sizes through the year? Can you just bank players on your list so no one else can get at them? Does their salary come into the cap at some point? Who’s paying for the logistics of a player moving interstate for a month or two? Can that player now be traded at the end of the year if he is still on the list? Is there a base salary they are on?

  3. I like the thought of being able to pick up players whenever you want during the season. If you look at the NBA, some really good role players have been discovered being undrafted talents who got picked up from the G League as a 10-day contract player or as a 2-way contract player. Priority should definitely be given to the lower ladder positions in this case instead of those clubs at the top being stacked with great players and then on top of that some of the best state league talent. But that is the balance that the NBA need to face, and out of the 30 teams in that league I would argue that 20 to 24 of them were really competitive each and every night (the rest clearly tanking for the Number 1 pick). But hey, the USA sports landscape is a different beast to Australia but I think it has potential to work

  4. Moronic. What would stop hoarding? Start the season with 45 players and then as soon as the season starts you go and sign another dozen, who will mostly just rot in the reserves just so you have injury cover. Stuff the clubs that are only competitive because they draft and list manage better than others, let's go back to open slather. And stuff the state league clubs who lose their players mid-year just say they can go and play for an AFL reserves team. Why don't we get rid of the salary cap too if it improves the 'product'? Flog.

  5. There are probably 5 too many teams with not enough A grade players to go around. Get rid of Gold Coast and 3 Vic teams.Start a new one in Tassie and everyone should play each other twice home and away

  6. -34 Rounds + Finals is too much and 17 Rounds + Finals is not enough so my Solution is this
-2 Week Pre Season (like we had this year)
    -1 Week Bye
-18 Round Season (including 3 Bye Rounds Rounds 9,10,11) All 18 Teams Play The Extra Home Game Goes to the Previous Seasons Top 9 after Round 18 The Bottom 6 are Eliminated. Round 1 and the Pre Season Bye will swap weeks if Easter falls on the week the Pre Season Bye is normally but that shouldnt happen often
-5 Round Post Home and Away Season (2 Pools) Pool A has 1st-6th in the Main Season and Pool B has 7th-12th The Extra Home Game is given teams 1st – 3rd and 7th to 9th in the main Season and 6th in Pool A will get a higher Seed than 1st in Pool B
    – 9 Game Finals we Have now
    Also no Pre Finals bye

  7. The main problem I have with player movements is free agency. I believe top clubs should not be able to take free agents from clubs that finished lower than them. If you finish 10th you can't look at free agents from 11th to 18th. I think a lot of problems have stemmed from top clubs raiding lower clubs.

  8. Lloydy shut up mate Essendon got good about 2 minutes ago now making out like them against those teams is just a straight up easy beat, talk about getting ahead of themselves, beat 1 top 8 team in gather round and now they're elite

  9. Hey Hutchy, April Fools Day was 17 days ago so I'm not sure why you're saying clubs should be able to sign and play anyone off the street whenever they want. Good joke just a tad late

  10. The funny thing is Lloydy says Essendon & St Kilda should bank 4 wins against the teams at the lower end of the ladder now. Hasn't he learnt by now that it never happens that easily, surprise wins happen all the time & will happen again, and things change very quickly for teams at the bottom (Collingwood in 2021, Essendon & Adelaide were bottom teams last year).

  11. How can caro say this would make the competition lose integrity when the nfl and the nba do it and i think most football (soccer) leagues have something similar, they are some of the top most recognised leagues in the world, there's no loss of integrity there.

  12. I agree with Hutchy:- in that there are probably plenty of state level and even strong country footy players that could be valuable players that never get the chance to play AFL. Why not let these guys have a shot at the big time? Even if it's only for a few games. There's bound to be plenty of gems out there.

  13. I understand where he's coming from, but if a good side like Collingwood can get the best ruckman in Australia who isn't on an AFL list, then that strengthens Collingwood, not the 4 or 5 teams down the bottom who need strengthening. If anything, it widens the gap between Collingwood and those teams. A player is likely to choose to play for the Pies at the moment, as they're playing good footy and will play finals. They're more attractive to free agents at the moment.
Who would decide to play for 6 weeks for the Eagles when you could play 6 weeks for the Pies?
That's the issue with Hutchy's idea.

  14. I reckon wait til round 15 or so each year, and then schedule all the “double up” fixtures for the last 5 rounds based on the current ladder position (e.g. the top 4 teams after 15 rounds are more likely to play eachother twice than they are to play a bottom four team).

Means top teams will play top teams before finals, and bottom teams will be able to fight it out possibly for a shot at the finals

  15. Why would you even contemplate having the teams that finish the home and away season in 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th position all playing in the finals when only one team since the turn of the millennium has won the premiership that finished the home and away season outside of the top 3?

  16. I'm with Caro, Jabba the Hutch has no patience and wants to reward teams that don't manage their list properly and this discussion always comes around when there is a ruck crisis at a big club. St Kilda have no tall forwards but they have move the magnets around and adjusted their game style to suit the profile of the forward line.

What is glaring from this discussion is how it also screws up the integrity of the competitions the AFL would be poaching these players from. Imagine losing a key Forward, Backman or Ruck to the AFL in the magoos for an independent team? It's just kicking the can down the line.

  17. Could be franchise issues as well. It is well known fact many Victorians do not want to play for interstate teams like GWS. If you were a talented 1st round draft pick, there are many clubs you would be avoiding if possible. Not a player issue its an AFL issue.

  18. Hutchy is right. Memo to Caro: AFL lost integrity by literally incentivising losing with its draft formats. Every season teams tank especially towards the end of the season.

Clubs should be able to sign or trade for anybody they want that is available at virtually any time of the season, bar say 5-6 weeks out from finals.

  19. Wait so you want to help struggling clubs to make the competition more fair and exciting but make the suggestion that Collingwood pick up the best player available? They are in the top 4 lol so how does that make the competition more fair for the bottom teams? This guy has lost what ever plot that he had left 😂

  20. Two ways to fix this:
1.) Everyone plays each other twice (home and away). More games means reduced break between games so greater lost management required where top teams will rest their good players or players who need a rest against the low clubs making those games more even.

2.) Relegation not reward for finishing bottom. Make every game meaningful and huge price on the line.
