Hurricane Survival: “Category 6” Gameplay

Category 6 is an upcoming survival game set during a gigantic hurricane plaguing half of the US. In this video, we have early access and try out the story mode. Despite its shortness, this game was pretty good… especially considering it was made by just one person!

  1. Someone tell the Dev that he did a great job with the world and mechanics. But please. Just drop the "Story" thing. A full page paragraph explanation would do.

  2. I am the developer. Thank you so much for playing Category 6! 🙌 It’s amazing to see how you explore the world I created. Your gameplay and reactions brought a huge smile to my face. If you or your viewers have any feedback, I'm all ears, it helps me keep improving! Thanks again for sharing my game with your community. 🌟

  3. The game looks really good except for all the swearing. Hopefully there will be an option to turn that off. Currently I have it wishlisted but if the option to turn off the swearing isn't there, it'll be a hard pass for me

  4. When playing the guessing game on undressing the lady, what if all answers would have been correct and you're basically just filling out the history between the 2 of you? If not, nice being 3 for 3!

  5. Oh boooy I don't know if I trust this. The icons in the menu were clearly not designed as a set, the line weight between each icon varies wildly, as does the style. As a professional artist, this screams of taking assets from google images and stuffing them inside the game. I reverse image searched a number of the Skills icons because they look the most suspicious to me (not really relating to the skill name Strength and the different line weights again) and all the ones I searched are coming from websites like Flaticon and Shutterstock. We have to hope the dev paid for a licence, otherwise this is stolen art.

The Power skill icon is even better: it comes from the website of a Russian astrologer who offers her services, called Astrokosh. Her website has very cohesive images and design which makes me believe she must have paid someone to create an asset pack for her business so I think the images are hers. The website is way too professional-looking to have sourced their images online so I believe she's the copyright owner. From a cursory glance, the astrologer looks very famous so it'd be a bad look not to pay her own artist. The Endurance icon comes from thesageclinic which is the website of a naturopathic clinic and you can find it on their retreat page. I'm not gonna do that for every single image, but I hope you get my point. This is stealing, pure and simple.

Also, the map looks suspicious to me. I'm pretty sure I recognise the top-down houses and building as coming from Inkarnate, which is a fantasy map-making tool. If that's the case, it means the map was def not done by an artist and there's the risk the dev didn't pay for the license to use in commercial products and used the free version instead.

I'm not saying there's only stolen art here or false advertisement. But this is the sort of behaviour that invites scrutiny so I truly, truly hope the dev paid for every necessary license. But in the case of the UI elements like the Skills icons, at least one of them is seemingly stolen from the astrologer's website and as an artist, I can't condone that. I know not everyone has the eye for that sort of things but please, when you see a game with barely cohesive UI elements and art style, at least ask questions, do some research. Don't promote or support financially a game that may be profiting off the back of artists.

  6. Best of luck to the dev. Hurricane survival game is actually a fairly realistic scenario compared to most other end of the world situations. My buddy in Florida about to living that :p

  7. Zak, If you find yourself in flood waters, do NOT drink that water, it's going to be contaminated with sewage, gasoline, oil, and a whole bunch of other nasty stuff. Even touching that water is a major risk for infection and that's even before taking into account the risks of being swept away by a current, getting hit by debris, and downed electrical lines that might still be energized, the latter of which I was glad to see represented! I think that for a game, this seems pretty interesting! I love the sarcastic humor.
