Hurricane Ian live coverage: Landfall near Sanibel Island, Florida

Hurricane Ian caused catastrophic storm surge, winds and flooding over the Florida peninsula as it made landfall, the National Hurricane Center said.

These are significant threats to areas of Tampa Bay and Florida’s Gulf Coast that don’t normally see such headlines, but they’re worth acting upon: People living along and near the coast are urged to shelter in place and remain in a safe spot until the storm has passed.

Hurricane Ian made landfall around 3:05 p.m. along the southwestern coast of Florida near Cayo Costa, the NHC said. It had maximum sustained winds of 150 mph, with even higher gusts.

At 4:35 p.m., Ian made a second landfall — a mainland landfall — south of Punta Gorda as a Category 4 storm packing 145-mph winds.

As of the 8 p.m. advisory, Hurricane Ian was located about 30 miles northeast of Punta Gorda, with a north-northeast movement at 8 mph. Maximum sustained winds are 115 mph. The storm weakened from a Category 4 storm to a Category 3.

  1. (Wed.) Hurricane Ian is nearly a CAT5 hurricane with 155 MPH sustained wind. The storm is set to hit the Ft. Meyers area directly in the next couple of hours. No WSR88Ds are operational in the entire State which sends a loud message: the Deep State will continue to drought the West while we inflict maximum damage to Florida, its crops, citizens and its commerce. Notice the right angles in the eyewall and the resulting pressure waves; but the power being applied from the satellite transmitter is deliberately insufficient. The eyewall rebuilds quickly and with greater intensity. The pressure charts and the Jet Stream show a path has been made for a possible run up the East coast over Georgia and the Carolinas. Ian currently has 937 millibar pressure in the eyewall (or 13.59 pounds per square inch / PSI) which will pull the ocean surface up to 18 feet and we still have higher than usual tides from the recent New Moon. All of it spells disaster, brought to you by the Deep State demons who are INTENT on turning America into a communist country of dependents.

  13. I live in central Florida and I am so thankful that I chose not to have homeowners insurance on my home because those who do are going to get robbed by the insurance industry to pay for insurance industry losses.

  18. I believe scientists and engineers should be working on ways to stop these in their track. I understand satellites can detect an eye forming when its about 1/4

    of a mile across. Small enough to have one of the weaker walls blown apart with munitions or microwave technology. It's time we try to control this terrible life threatening hazard.
