As our Kalahari trip drew to an end, we decided to take one of Martin’s horses and a few of the local Nama people’s horses and set out hunting for one last oryx. We first had to ride Martin’s horse in the afternoon for twenty to thirty kilometers to the hunting area where the other horses would be. The next morning the hunt will start from there. None of these horses are trained to hunt, they aren’t even familiar with someone riding them carrying a rifle. I was only to ride a short distance the afternoon with Martin’s horse to get him used to the rifle. While galloping between two dunes the rifle’s leather sling broke and landed on his back. Startled he started running and bucking trying to throw me. He then chose a grey camel thorn tree to throw me against, I managed to get hold of the rifle behind me with my left hand for it not to fall to the ground, but that just spurred him on, I am guessing he then thought it was a whip. After a while, I got him under control, but then even without the rifle, he wasn’t keen on me riding him.

Early the next morning we saddled the horses, I mounted him without the rifle to check the length of the stirrups with Martin holding the reins. The moment I got on he suddenly jumped straight up into the air falling backward on his back on me. My head merely missed a concrete slap, immediately Seun offered me one of his horses that was even more unfamiliar with this kind of outing. Petrus, Seun, Casper, and I then set out into the dunes.

Riding into the sun as the wind was now blowing towards the west. Late morning, we spotted five oryxes feeding on the south slope of a dune they were about 800 meters away. We slowly rode on the slope of the adjacent dune towards them. When we were parallel to them, we went on foot stalking them over the dune. Creeping the last few meters, they spotted us turning and faced us about 230 meters away. I aimed at the center of the chest of a young bull and the bullet struck him just there, but to my surprise, you could see the bullet exit on his left sight. He ran another 150 meters or so stopped and allowed me a second shot on which he dropped in his tracks. It turned out that the projectile entered his chest turned under his left shoulder and exited just behind the shoulder.

An absolute adrenaline-packed eleven days came to an end. Tiesie processed our meat into biltong, boerewors, droewors, mince, and stewing meat. The boerewors and droewors is some of the best I’ve tasted they use Persian sheep fat, which gives it a very distinctive taste.
