Hunting Myths | Fresh Tracks Weekly (Ep. 39)

Montana turkey season started out great, filling a couple tags on opening day! We cooked one of the birds in a couple different ways to make some office lunches this week.

Michael finally got his boat out so gives us the fishing update in which he landed a few nice walleye, bass, trout and pike.

The snow keeps coming in the western United States, with the majority of the Snotel sites measuring over 150% snow water equivalent. Arizona Game and Fish sent out an email warning turkey hunters areas are inaccessible due to high snowpack.

In Idaho a Fish and Game officer shot and killed a domestic dog for chasing and killing mule deer.

Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks announced that they will embark on new mule deer monitoring, research and outreach initiatives in response to the long-term decline in mule deer numbers.

The Wyoming corner crossing case is back in the news after both sides have filed for summary judgment wanting the judge to rule before going to trial.

For the deeper dive, we talk about a few hunting myths and pet peeves that drive us crazy.

  1. That Wyoming corner crossing, there is no way the owner can claim to own the airspace above his land. The FAA has sole jurisdiction over airspace from the land to into space in the US there has been many cases before and all have ruled that you own the land but not the air, technically I could fly 1 inch above your lawn and not be trespassing.

  2. I'm in the camp that older the animal the tougher or chewy meat. My experience in an older Bull Elk I shot. The elk was quartered and brought to Craig game processor. When I picked up the processed meat the owner requested to see the rack, because the quarters were the largest they've seen that season. The rack was big but was definitely an older bull. The meat had great flavor but was definitely tougher.

  3. Here's my take on corner crossing. At least where I'm from a ten foot perimiter of private land is deemed government easement. Therefore ,at least where I'm from that should mean that on grid patterns, as mentioned, should allow for 20 feet of public right-of-way for corner crossing.

  4. Guiding for 35 years now and I hate long range shooting at game. Coyote, go ahead but game animals deserve to be hunted and not sniped. Real world game shots are not the same as ringing a gong. I do mark my fly rod and once caught a 19.5" cutthroat in the wilderness area of the Selway River. Would not believe it if someone told me they had done so. Hypocrite I am!
