Humanity Rising Day 641: Summit on Ukraine I: Overview of the War

This Summit on Ukraine is being convened on the first anniversary of the Russian military operation into Ukraine to secure a land bridge to Crimea which was launched Feb 24, 2022. The Ukraine war has actually been going on since 2014 when the United States staged a coup in Ukraine to overthrow a regime maintaining Ukraine as a neutral nation and replacing it with a regime that was anti-Russian and pro-US which immediately began waging war against the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine where the population is 80% Russian. In response, the Russians armed the local populations and seized Crimea. Military conflict has been going on since then and continues to the present day.

What is distinctive about the war in Ukraine is that it is between the two superpowers — The US and Russia — both of which are armed with nuclear weapons and both of which have threatened to use them. The world is thus in the most dangerous period since the Cuban missile crisis of 1962 when the US and Russia almost went to nuclear war. What is also distinctive is that the war is being conducted as the world faces runaway climate change and there is an urgent necessity for the US to be working with the Russians to solve critical global challenges.

This Summit is being co-sponsored with Code Pink, a feminist grassroots organization working to end U.S. warfare and imperialism, support peace and human rights initiatives, and redirect resources into healthcare, education, green jobs and other life-affirming programs.

Moderators:

  1. Vladimir Pozner’s father was a KGB agent. Vladimir himself worked for Soviet propaganda for decades. Today he is Kremlin’s “liberal” asset. But the US is still asleep.

  2. Let's all take a moment to really appreciate Jim Garrison characterizing Russia's illegal, murderous war of aggression as "Putin taking a stand," when asking about public support for the war in Russia, which Pozner, an employee of Russian state television proceeds to answer with this:

Pozner: "I would say yes, the vast majority of Russians today support Putin"
Pozner a few minutes later: "Today in Russia, it is very difficult to publicly disagree with what's going on. It is dangerous; in my opinion it has become a somewhat repressive society. People have gone to jail for speaking their mind."

    🤔

    Later on:
Pozner: "If there is a hell, that's where journalists are going to go. They deserve to burn in hell for what they've been doing. They have played a role in exacerbating the relationship, and the possibility of a nuclear war."

No examples are given of course, but hey never miss an opportunity to denigrate journalists if you want to keep people confused. Funny how nothing is said on the state of independent media within Russia.

Hilarious that Jodie Evans thinks she is immune to propaganda as she mumbles through an incoherent recital of RT talking points regarding Ukraine. The confidence of a true believer. Code Pink has become an insult to anti-war organizing and they don't even realize it. It'd be great if these bozos took a trip to Ukraine for themselves; maybe they'll actually learn something, but I won't hold my breath.

  3. We do not need to pay a lot of attention to Mr Posner's sympathetic explanations of Russia's imperial grievances as articulate as he is about them. That's the past. Imagine France out of the blue deciding to get back Algeria or Britain deciding that it needed to control India again. A French or a British version of Mr Posner would then certainly be able to advocate for such projects as well, relying on the same historical humiliation arguments. Would we take that seriously?

What really matters about this speech are the specific actions that follow from it. And what follows from it is that the West should stop helping Ukraine and negotiate with Mr Putin a new way to divide Eastern Europe. That is the man's actual point once we cut through the fluff.

Of course that is exactly what the Russian leadership wants. Really, this sounds like a fine piece of Kremlin propaganda that targets a more sophisticated audience. Fine indeed as most of the commenters here have fallen for it.

As for whether or not it's indeed time to divide Eastern Europe again and thus resurrect the Russian Empire, we need to consider what kind of beast Russia has become. I suggest folks spend some time researching what life is really like in modern Russia before giving a nod to the idea of handing a bunch of European countries over to it. To be more specific, those countries may include Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland and Poland, based on the historical Russian Empire. As somebody who has some idea of what modern Russia is about I find the prospect of those countries being swallowed by it monstrous. What about you all?

  4. 50:00 I am unsure that USA would start war with Mexico if later would sign a pact with russia that if one of them is attacked another will come with aid. Neither I think war would happen if there would be a base with russians on Mexico soil, if there won't be any nukes at the base. It is possible there would be economic sanctions, but full scale invasion I doubt it

  5. We can be charitable with Pozner considering that he is currently in Russia and has to be very careful with what he says. That same sentiment cannot be extended to the 2 American moderators. I don’t know if they’re too dumb to realize what they’re saying, or they’re just shilling for Putin outright.

In either case, you can’t consider yourself anti-war and pro-Russia. These two principles are not compatible in this case. Russia is the aggressor and has subjugated Ukrainian peoples long before the US and NATO were ever a thing. This is absolutely about blood and soil, much like Hitler’s annexation of the Sudetenland. Further, just because a leader thinks something may or may not be a threat doesn’t effectively legitimize it. The evidence doesn’t hold up and the way things have played out in reality doesn’t support Putin’s anti-NATO rhetoric either.

  6. Ms. Evans, it seems you're unaware that nowadays many Russians became fascists. In addition, it wasn't just Russians among those 20+ millions who lost their lives during WWII but many Ukrainians in addition to other USSR nationalities.

  7. Blaming is an easy emotional way, reasoning is a more sophisticated and intelligent way.
Reasoning requires effort, time spending, energy spending.
Today we live in a culture of "unapologetic enjoyment" and not many people are interested in reasoning.

  8. They forgot to mention Yugoslavia and Iraq (these are partners of the USSR, and R.F. assumed the role of heir) And the war against these states was perceived as a slap in the face. When they beat those who hoped for you, but you can't stand up for them and they don't listen to your objections.

  9. It is also important that the war has acquired hybrid forms. Facebook revolutions have happened in the CIS countries.

With the colossal superiority of the West at the moment (dozens of times in the economy), any subject can be turned into a traitor and set up against R.F.
The West practically has a monopoly on the global information agenda.

There was a need to push back not only NATO, but also the struggle in the information field.

But! Due to the fact that the Russian Federation has a smaller gap with NATO countries in armament (at times) than in information capabilities (dozens of times). It is logical that Russia is forced to rely on these methods.

  11. Hmm.. So then why did Russia occupy Crimea and Donbass right after Ukraine overthrew Yanukovich only to join the European Union (at that time NATO didn't plan to expand to Ukraine at all)?
And why does Putin already talk about returning "their land" back to Russia?
As we can see Russia has dirty goals

Пусть сделает референдум по мирным переговорам, единственное что я хочу чтобы стороны конфликта сели за стол переговоров и срочно прекратили ужасы войны заключив вечный мир по образцу мира между Северной и Южной Кореей

  13. What's crazy is that "Both" of our Governments lie to each other. Russia – 1994 Budapest Memorandum & US – Minsk Agreements. Instead of blaming each other, each side needs to look within & decide to stop this bickering. In order for true diplomacy & Peace, we need to hit the reset button & give each side a fresh start. Then we have to compromise & trust each other. Also stop all the Propaganda going forward!

  14. 1:12:33 Careful! That's a mistranslation! She admitted that the result of the peace talks was that it only bought more time for Ukraine to militarize! While some in the West probably wanted that, Germany and France were most likely genuinely open to peace.

  17. they r fighting for the gas on the skin of regular people as always. Ukraine was a corrupted country that now has nazist in its military and an invasion from a dictator. USA, as always, escalated the problems to take advantage. Regular people die and the rich get richer. They r putting Ukrainians and Russians against each other with crazy propaganda from both sides.

  18. The majority of people trying to disagree with Pozner’s opinion barely provides any counter-arguments that could be opposed to Pozner’s ones.
All emotional and finger pointing – those are the cornerstones of a liberal/lefty people in any serious discussions.

  19. Every body forget that word for slave used at west is description of ethnic group of slavic people that western powers used to kidnap and sell in Mediterranean lands. African people came way later. That what enforced slavic tribes to unite and build a country that used to be called kievskaya russ. All those wars that Russians did at constantinople Crimea and Caucasus region primarily was to stop human traffic by destroying slave markets.

  20. Pozner is a master of cherry-picking. He likes facts, so I give people a few:

    1. 1994 year Budapest Memorandum. Russia has done a public promise to protect Urkaine in exchange for a nuclear weapon and respect the existing borders of Ukraine.

    2. 1994-2014. All years then Russian and Putin himself declare friendship with Ukraine.

    3. 2014 year February. Ukraine has a revolution and the country hasn't a legitime government.

    4. According to opinion polls more than half of Ukraine haven't supported the revolution and have a positive attitude to Russia. The Constitution of Ukraine had a clear statement about non-bloc country status.

    4. In this case putin decide to put a knife in the back of Ukraine and annex Crimea, according to the vague possibility that sometimes NATO may be accepted Ukraine.

    5. Next with the support of russia military forces Putin created quasi-republics in the east of Ukraine.

    6. After this most people of Ukraine begin to hate Russia and want to NATO. The Constitution of Ukraine has changed and country no more has a statement about non-bloc status. Ukraine's government officially declare course to NAto.

In my private opinion, Putin has done more than others to create a mortal rival on the border of Russia. Genius.

  21. If the West wanted to stop that local conflict they would never have sent the weapons to Ukraine. The shame to the West! People are dying just because of you only.

Если бы Запад хотел остановить этот локальный конфликт, они никогда не снабжали бы Украину вооружением. Позор Западу! Люди погибают и погибают только из-за вас.
