Not bad, although i sugest for the next time, human military in first contact scenario with unknown aliens would probably give a try to diplomacy and deterence by words before starts to fight against enemy, in wich the humanity (nor the state if its still divided into nations) are not in war with yet. Secondly, the diplomacy effort can (and should) be interwowen with planned tactics of the commander/admiral, to work/support each other.
For example, in this case they should use a stealth retranslation buoy, or some weaker escort ship, hidden from the attackers fleet far enough, to force attackers, to divide their forces before combat itself. Worst case scenerio, one of the two groups will escape. Probable case scenerio – will kill one after the other and ideal case scenerio, attackers would comply to diplomacy message, regardless from what starship it came out and everyone lives.
Another point, when human military rammed trough the invasion fleet, they would probably start to send down footsoldiers, engineers and humanitarian aid, in paralel to their starships "hunting the rest of enemies". Btw that might be quite tedious process, when both sides have FTL drives with no known restriction to frequency of ussage, or max lenght of one jump.
