until we can learn to love the train again, we are doomed to see it as the inconvenience it has assuredly become.

What happens if next week Labour commits to HS2 to Manchester ? They should and let the people decide at the election. Sunak thinks he's got the ear of the nation, I'm not sure he has
Somebody is ripping the UK off?
I did some calculations.
I estimate that there is about 300 km From London to Manchester. Latest independent estimation was £110 BN.
It is 2,7 km per £1 BN.
Here in DK we are building a combined Road and Train tunnel to Germany.
Latest estimate £5,7 BN. Tunnel length 18 km plus a 4 km new bridge towards the tunnel. That's 22 km. It gives a cost of 3,8 km per £1 BN.
Keep in mind, the tunnel is 5 tubes. Two road, two rail and one service. And the tunnel is under deep water, and to complete the task, two new harbors have been build. New tracks and roads onshore and a new train station too.
HS2, is "just" two tracks!!!!!
Fehmarn Belt Tunnel: 3,8 km per £1BN.
HS2: 2,7 km per £1BN.
Why is HS2 that expensive? Is someone skimming the milk?
Can they not use the '350 brexit millions' a week to build HS2…that roughly 18 billions a year. Where is it all gone?
Manchester to London 2 hours 15 minutes . Manchester to somewhere in the sticks outside London by HS 2 1 hour 41 minutes then onto Euston by horse and cart say two hours to travel the next 10 miles ( Ave speed of mechanised travel in London 5 miles per hour .) Total 3 hours 41 minutes . Old Scottish song " you take the highroad and I'll take the low road ………..😊
Another U turn by the Tory Party, no apology to anyone.
Greetings Professor Tim😊 He who talks with forked tongue and hot air Sunak caused me a dreadful bout of nausea having unfortunately tuned in to his Markle moment grifting speech yesterday, with his non dom wifey who until discovered gave up her non dom privilege. However amusing I found it, it is no laughing matter for the UK, you and I,our children and their offspring will suffer another term of Tory chaos, deciet and robbery! Vote them Out. HS2 is small fry considering bigger cuts and mis management. And, its always us that pay the price. Remember my wise words when you tick your box next year.
I've always thought HS2 was horribly misnamed. As I understand it the main purpose of it is to solve the problem of limited capacity on local lines, by putting the fast express trains on a totally separate line. So the slower local trains can be made more frequent without having to worry about an express train crashing into the back of them. If you're going to make a new express line from scratch then you might as well make it a fast one, but the speed of it was never the point.
Calling it HS2 though makes it sound like cutting the journey time from the North to London was priority number 1, and more than 10 years later we still see grumbles from people about "how can we be spending all this money just to cut 20 minutes off the train to London". I can't help thinking that's a big part of the reason the public has never been fully behind the project.
Obviously the spiralling costs are a problem, albeit a predictable one since every major government project seems to have totally uncontrollable budgets (Track + Trace, the new NHS IT system that never was, Making Tax Digital, Crossrail, the list goes on I'm sure).
If they wanted to open up the ''North'' why did the not start
at Manchester go east /west and then start coming south.
Concur with some of your comments. A couple of areas that could be improved – cutting out the unnecessary commentaries over the tannoy (most of which state the obvious), providing high quality food, refreshments and drink to travellers would also be welcome – microwaved bacon butties are truly awful!
Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Spain, France, Italy and Germany have built and developed high speed train infrastructure.
The UK, under the Tories 13 years of power, cant.
Iz there any good news in the future.
The HS2 cancellation signals two things to the whole world:
1. Britain is incompetent at building major infrastructure
2. Britain is broke and on the way down
But what really sticks in the craw is that Sunak can inflict a humiliation like this on the nation he is responsible for leading so that he can grub together a few billion for a tax giveaway next year in the vain hope it will save his sorry arse in the GE. Party before country with the Conservatives, always.
There was no mention at all from any government member regarding HS3; whether it will be cancelled or continued. So HS3 is still a thing even though HS2 was a mighty failure!
The project should have started in the north instead of in the south. That would have been cheaper, fater, more efficient and hade to cancel. What is now being proposed is a waste of money already spent. You know what you are going to get with this new "plan": next to nothing. Some plastering over of a pothole here and there, that'll be it.
Unfortunately, Thomas the Tank Engine was a really useless engine… And that's what we have after 13 years of rule by the Conservative Party.
For how much HS/2 has cost, over the past decade we could have built an entire backbone and started to contemplate expanding out to other parts of the country. It's been a shambolic affair and the British people have become far too placid and indoctrinated to believe that this kind of thing is to be expected. Perhaps a case is to be made to be at least a little more like our French cousins in attitude towards holding the government to account.
GB News is cleaning house now they know the tory party is there for the taking
HS2 is nothing to do with transport…and everything to do with Cabinet Office money laundering.
People living in the North where HS2 is now cancelled by the PM, would take an extra 10 minutes time to reach London. There’s not much delay for anyone and Starmer who has kept pin drop silence will find himself dragged into an un-winnable election fight on this issue…even people in the Labour Party are giving Sunak credit for his brilliant speech when his back was to the wall and he knew he had rivals who wish to oust him and take his place …
The only point to the HS2 is for people who have a desperate need to see a slagheap.
Lies Lies & more Lies ! This week we have put up with all the comments from the pm about not being rushed & how he had to consider things ? Well if he truly was considering and planning things then when he told us he was ending HS2 then a full plan of his projects along with priced schedules should have accompanied his announcement, instead we got vague stupid un costed and open ended time lines of nonsense ! 40 hospitals stopping compulsory car share the seven deadly bins meat tax etc .
All thos house and comuities destroyed for what?
HS2 was always going to cost too much, it should have been cancelled completely.
As for train travel, it has never been the same since the 70's with overcrowded trains
full of noisy people having a good time at your expense.
Even if you travel First Class, you still get the same dire service and noise, every ticket
should come with a health warning!
This is another charge to add to the long list against the Tories.
It’s time to return ownership of all utilities and transport back to the people.
I used to drive trains Prof. Mostly DOO services on commuter lines. And these overloud automated announcements are truly irritating. Even for the person up front. The constant badgering was torture. I can remember passengers pleading with me to turn them off. But it was a legal requirement. I'd still accidentally brush up against the MCB panel though. Oops.
For Henri Matisse train travel provided only his only excuse from work, his paintings were conceived as a transcendental antidote to our increasingly busy and stressed lives.
It’s just been leaked that HS2 will stop at Old Oak Commons if PRIVATE money won’t build the line to Euston. The “announcement” is unravelling by the hour.
GB is becoming a laughing stock.
And I don't want to get you started, but you didn't even mention the fares!
A pure joke and a waste of taxpayers money.
Reactivity over pro activity is the Tory mindset. Quick fix heroes.Dead animals, trees, distressed already distressed people in the name of shiteism!
Maybe they can open a Heritage railway and have Harry Potter specials with a mock up of a platform 9 3/4 at King’s Cross at the London outskirts And Peaky blinders retail village and resort at the Birmingham end, if it’s not going to Euston.
Wasnt the HS2 contract given to Boris Johnsons father?
Once upon a time there was SISYPHUS who was destined to labour pursuant to the hapless and hopeless manifestations of others.
The tax payers of our country….welcome to the designation of being a labourer in repairing the damage and black hole birthed by the likes of the Serial Liar and George.
Evening Prof. Never saw the point of this project. Far better to put the money into reopening some of the lines axed by Beeching to provide better links across the country.
😇👍
Next year they'll say it's cost us 36 Billion to fix some of the the potholes, caused by the lazy disabled on mobility scooters.
