  1. Thanks for not listing the battleforces as what to get first despite them being so recent. Really rubs salt in the wound that around 75% of people who wanted one didn't get one.

  2. Regarding beginner lore, Arbitor Ian just released a great beginner-friendly intro video to Chaos Space Marines on youtube, highly recommended for getting into the faction! Title is "The NINE TRAITOR LEGIONS of the Chaos Space Marines | Warhammer 40,000 Lore"

  3. I used the HH range to pad out my CSM army. With the Age of Darkness box I got bodies to work with, CSM terminators, Dred as a Hellbrute, both leaders can be a Chaos Lord and Executioner and the Spartan tank I'm using as a Ork Battlewagon. The CSM Killteam is a better Chosen box. The 2 boxes of Assault Marines with a box of Raptors can hammer out a lot of Warp Talons with the HH term Lighting Claw parts and Raptors obviously. The way to get a cheap Deamon Prince is just to grab Primarch Guilliman, same base and size but you gotta chaos him up. Any extras can go on the bodies to create whatever you need really.

  4. If by some unlikely chance my LGS has one of the long war boxes left next week when I go pick up some pre-price increase boxes I'll take it as a sign from the dark gods and start a CSM army. They're not the first one I'd go for but solidly in the interested tier. But given how popular they have been there's probably no chance of that happening.

  5. Fun fact, I'm just getting into the game. I was considering getting some stuff for quite a while, and then the Battleforces and the Codex became a thing. I was even a few days late to the party when I decided to pull the trigger. I went to 8 aussie sites, all but 1 had sold out… but bah gawd I got the veterans of the long war box and I'm looking forward to that arriving. I've been working on getting paints, tools and brushes for the past week. I have spent… a dumb amount of money but I'm so damn excited to start collecting.

  6. I'm at the point where I can't recommend people to get into Warhammer anymore. I'm so disheartened with the state of things that my only real suggestion in how to start any new army is "get a second job".

  7. The Battleforces are the first and last CSM that I'm buying from GW and only because I'm getting a great discount on them. Everything else, I bought second-hand for 50% msrp

  8. Don’t sleep on the Chaos Sorcerer in Terminator armor. His abilities give Advance and Charge for a unit, and on a 2+ you pick a unit within 12 inches of him. Until your next movement phase any attack going into that unit has an extra pip of AP on it.

Good for Terminators in general, I’d consider him GREAT in the Alpha Legion specific detachment where you can give him Lone Operative.

  9. Honestly, just grab Heresy stuff for your CSM battleline and Raptors. It's more likely to be in stock. I have 2 Contemptors playing the part of helbrutes and a lot of the new Mkiii Tacticals for Legionaries and Mk6 Assault Marines for Raptors.

Or rather, had. Moved to Battletech cause it's cheaper and the company that makes it actually does seem to care about its players.

  10. Thanks so much for this. I've been going back and forth on whether to expand Sisters (I wasn't impressed with their new battleforce or combat patrol) or start Chaos (their new combat patrol "looks cool" but I know nothing of what the units do), so this is really useful and timely for me. We appreciate everything you do — you work extremely hard.

  11. friendly advice to people who aren't looking for a difficult time, paint your CSM black legion. sure gold trim painting is timely and metallics are horrible to paint but you can get a really nice black with some dry brushing and black is the easiest color to touch up when you make a mistake. also nuln oil is great for easily getting crisp meeting points where trim meets pad.

  12. I decided to start my CSM army when the Chaos Space Marines Boarding Patrol box was revealed, which featured Abaddon, 10 Legionaries, and 20 Cultists for a great price. That was the BEST WH40K starting box I’ve ever seen! Unfortunately, it took about 4 months for it to be released. In the meantime, I bought the 9e Combat Patrol, Balefleet battleforce, Wrath of the Soul Forge King, and Agastus boxes, which gave me a good variety of CSM units (and some new Space Marines units).

I remember having difficulty finding a Master of Possession at the time but that’s not a problem anymore because it’s in new 10e CP box. The only problem with CSM is that their discount boxes tend to include Daemon Engines instead of vehicles, and the Helbrute isn’t great and the Heldrake is as bad as every other Flyer in 10e. The best dael was the Forgefiend/Maulerfiend in the Eldritch Omens box, which I split with an Aeldari player.

I bought 2 Chaos Rhinos to help get my Chosen and Legionaries into combat. The Rhino is great because it has Transport 12 (like a Land Raider) and it’s cheaper (both $$ and points) than a Space Marines Impulsor. I also recently bought 2 Chaos Predator tanks. I wish CSM had some newer vehicles but at least theirs are cheap and fairly powerful for their points.

The new CSM Battleforce boxes are good deals for players starting a CSM army, but I already own everything in the Veterans of the Long War box so I’m passing on that one. I bought the Dread Talons BF box because I’m starting a Night Lords army. I’m just waiting for the Jump Pack Chaos Lords and Night Lords Kill Team boxes to be released; 2 or 3 of those and I’ll have a 2000 points army. Hopefully GW will also release a Night Lords upgrades kit so I can customize my Chaos Terminators, Chosen, and Raptors squads.
