Unloading large and heavy sawmill or firewood logs from a trailer with a rubber tired tractor with a front end loader can be dangerous. Some people use log chains, cant hooks, tongs, or jacks. None of that is needed, only a set of tractor forks. So here are several safe techniques that are simple and effective we have developed after unloading many millions of pounds of logs. These techniques are quick, effective, safe and can be done by anyone. Tractor or pallet forks can be purchased from any New Holland, John Deere, Mahindra or even your local Tractor Supply (TSC).

    I wish more folks worked safe.
    It's not all about going fast but going fast safe and efficient.
    Inexperienced trailer operators are very scary.
    Folks should do more research before using one.

  7. Great video. I too like to move bigger logs with pallet forks rather than my grapple. In addition to risk of tipping, a heavy log off center puts a huge twisting force on the FEL and could even bend the FEL ($$$) even if the tractor doesn't tip.

  10. Get it done Big Rob. I will use my spare knuckleboom when I have some big logs. But I dont have it around all the times. We still use it a lot in the woods. My Pop use to build a ramp and dig a hole in front for the six whelk truck he hauled on. Used a john deere 4020 with forks to load. His skidder was a 3020. It was the first skidder I drove Good memories. Thx HHA. AC.

    For a start up small sawmill operation.
    Any tips on axle ratings I should look for?
    Do you have two trailers. One for the tractor and one for the logs?
