(Minor spoilers)To clarify, you fight a dragon (different one) at the start of the game in a flashback scene. One does not prevent the other. U have to see the flashback scene to even progress to this part in the story.
I got the dead ringer and the dragon got away.
Just did this and got my pawn a dragon kill! Should help boost her desirability in the rift. The lance is nice too lol.
Dragon didn't spawn for me in Melve. Before or after delivering the letter. My char is level 10 so /shrug.

After 6 attempts with me missing shots and the dragon flying away I finally Killed the dragon then I stupidly jumped off the gun and died and the body disappears when you reload save. Good thing I have that hard inn save.
I got the ox cart quest triggered before doing any monster culling, went to Melve and there is no dragon. Do I need to re load from inn and do some quests for Brandt first??

I didn't ride the oxcart and went there by walk, there was no dragon fight and delivered the letter. So it is missable.

The dragon wasnāt even there when I got to the city for this mission. I donāt like how this game locks you out of quests
I got the weapon somehow without killing the dragon. I did about 4 bars of danags

My oxcart blew up during travel and now not only can i not get the spear but i cant get the class

When I did this quest I never saw a dragon here. How is everyone getting a dragon?

You do fight this dragon again later in the story for those that miss the chance here and you still get the weapon
This works. It took me many attempts. I was lucky to get a save right off the ox cart in Melve. It took me 2 ballistic shots to kill it. You need to shot one when heās on the ground (I think he wonāt fly up unless his health is lowered, it took too long for the ppl to do it, so take one shot when itās on the ground) and then āall or nothingā the second shot needs to hit him in the air. (If it misses in the air, reset immediately) If it takes more than 2 shots, I waiting like 3 mins for the towns ppl to attack for a while then gave him the ol 1-2. It then teleported me to the dragon and the dude unlocked Mystic Spearhand right then and there. I was lv 13 and went to lv 16. I just did monster culling then went to Melve. I did the Ox cart quest way before all this and still worked. Good luck Arisen.

The dragon never appeared for me damn.
You can also use the Thiefās Core Skill Bump and Lift to aquire Dead Ringer. I acquired it this way then went to the ballista to try and kill it but he flew away before I could. However, I did still get to unlock the Invocation and, obviously, the weapon.
I killed the dragon midair as it was trying to fly away but it's body fell off the cliff š¢
I stumbled across this dragon a second time a few hours ago in its lair and killed it with Sigurd. I didnāt realize Iād received a weapon I also got a dragon shield and around 70k gold in chests. I got lucky with my thief and got a robe drop from a litch and had the Medusa bow drop on my first real fight with a Medusa. Absolutely loving this game!
You can get it somewhere else too I forget but I have it and didn't kill the dragon it retreated. Unfortunately I don't remember where it was

I did the ox cart to Melve but I didn't get the dragon encounter… I only delivered a letter and cleared out some saurians on the opposite bank to the the town… š„
YOU CAN STILL GET THE WEAPON, I missed killing it the first time and got it by doing sigurds mission(killing the dragon at the dragon tower) that he helps you kill, this video is a method thats not the right way to get the weapon but more of like a early opportunity

There is no dragon anymore. After I receive the mission and take the oxcart to the town.
