In the 12 months since our last video on Bangkok’s best-kept secret, the Burmese food served by migrants and refugees throughout the city, that cuisine has suddenly exploded into the mainstream. From upscale teahouses to rooftop restaurants to a thriving bar street, tea leaf salad and bowls of Shan Noodles are quickly becoming a part of local culinary culture. So in this video, we explore what’s changed, how it’s happened, and how ethnic cuisine hits the “big time”- from pizza to dim sum to, it seems, Myanmar’s specialties.

Another OTR video. You beauty. A big thumbs up before it even starts.
Btw, the 'y' in 'Myanmar' is a consonant. It is pronounced together with the 'M'.
Great video nevertheless!
Edit: At 13:35 Aung San Suu Kyi is not and never was the president of Myanmar. When her party, NLD (the National League for Democracy) won the 2015 general elections in our country, she was given the role of State Consultant (I translated it on my own, may not be the official term) which is a position supposedly higher than that of the president.
How about feel bangkok? That’s Burmese restaurant in bkk too
Great video! I love the Burmese cuisine. One fact check though na. Suu Kyi wasn't president. She's unable to be under the constitution that forbids anyone married to a foreigner. She had a puppet PM instead. But his story is worth a video of it's own as he spent 20 years locked up in In Sein prison…
i lived with filipino, UK and nepal people in the house and they are enjoying the food too much that one even requested to make a tea leaves salad for her birthday party which I DID and everyone devoured it
Burmese Chinese American here, Burmese food is good, but the best places if you live in the USA, are the Buddhist temples in New Jersey, LA, and New York or a Burmese household. Not even restaurants because they don't last too long even though they're gems.
As a Thai, Im so great that weastern cares about Myanmar. Feels so sad for the myanmar people.
KHL t-shirt 😢? What a shame promoting a brand linked to government killing innocent people in Ukraine 😢
I worked there, rural.
Local Burmese food – loads of oil. Bloody horrible
Think of the situation when you were born in the first military coup in 1960s and then lived through another 30 years under Military Coup. That is me.
Jed Shoal
Thank you so much for the passion you bring to your content and for shining a spotlight on Burmese cuisine. As a displaced student and the first in my family to study abroad, adjusting to life in a place where everything is different—the culture, the food, the language, and societal values—hasn't always been easy. Whenever I have to deal with stressful days in work or school, the thing I crave most is a home-cooked meal, made with love and care. What I appreciate most about your video is how you connected the story of Italian immigrants and their pizza to the rise of Burmese cuisine. Kudos to all the pioneers and brave individuals from Myanmar who took the risk to bring our cuisine to the global stage. I hope that one day we'll see Burmese food spots around every corner, just like Italian pizza stalls.
Slight Similarity to Chinese Malaysians Street Food.
It will never be a next big thing! Think about it….🤡 with due respect to all burmaness people.
I love Burmese food so much, I visited Yangon in 2015 and had a great time. I was always so surprised how little (if any) burmese food there is in London and New York. This is reductive, but Burmese food has such a great combo of flavors/textures from SE Asian and Indian cuisines, two of the most broadly appreciated, + something that's totally uniquely Burmese. The chefs aren't simply hyping, there really is no reason why Burmese food wouldn't be massively popular.
I would love to see your take on Laos food <3
If you want to try more Burmese (particularly Shan) food head Mae Sai. And Chiang Mai, of ours.
I am glad Burmese food is getting its flowers in Bangkok. I've sought out Burmese food over 10 years ago and it was limited to Sukhumvit Soi 1 near Bumrungrad Hospital. Their culinary profile is quite unique despite drawing from the same influences as its SE Asia neighbors. I went to Yangon and enjoyed FEEL and was happy to see it pop up here. Now, Tea Leaf salad can be found at some Thai restaurants.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Dude, thanks for giving Burmese food and people from Burma the spotlight they so rightfully deserves. So much love for and joy from what you do ❤🎉😊
It's only the next big things because it's unknown due to the fact that people aren't going to Myanmar's due to the ingoing conflict
As a Taiwanese , we do have one Burmese street that located in Taipei City. The cuisines and tea culture are so fascinating and amazing .Will definitely recommend you to come and experience in Taiwan.
I'm a burmese living in Yangon and your video of our food has made me happy and proud. Thank you !
Unless one lives in a major US city, by the time Myanmar dishes hit main street, they will ended up as a fusion of Asian cuisine. Even now it is rare to find a "Chinese" restaurant that doesn't have Vietnamese, Thai, and even Indian dishes mixed into a generic SE Asian menu, along with the prerequisite hamburger and chicken nuggets for the kiddos.
French, Italian, American, Mexican fare are universally known. Other national dishes often get bunched into regional areas ( e.g. Mediterranean often includes North African, Levant, Greek, and even Spanish and Italian dishes). Many restaurants from other countries end up niche endeavors catering to ex-pats or tourists. Never quite entering the universally known cuisines.
To be clear, am only referring to typical towns (e.g., Wichita, Boise, Shreveport, etc) not major cities where the population can and does support a more UN food diversity.
Good video but please do not promote BurBrit. They are cooperating together with military junta to censor and cut off internet in Burma.
I lived in Myanmar for 2 years, traveled the country, Rakhine food is by far the best, otherwise…not so much
I'm burmese and im so happy burmese food is finally getting its flowers! I hope to see more dishes from all the ethnic groups from myanmar get more recognition as myanmar is a beautiful nation with a lot of different cultures. Good to know that people who escaped an awful and tragic situation are thriving, wishing for an equitable and democratic myanmar free of genocide and politicide 🙏
I Wish Northeast Indian Food Becomes Globally Popular! People Will Realize That There is More To Indian Food Than Naan and Butter Chicken!
just fyi, daw aung san su kyi is not the president, even before the coup de'tat.
Mohinga the PhoRamen of Myanmar

Who is Boris?
I love your channel!
