Robert Mazur is a former government agent who investigated drug-money laundering for the US Drug Enforcement Administration, the Internal Revenue Service intelligence division, and the Customs Service. While deep undercover in hot spots such as Florida, Colombia, and Panama, Mazur successfully infiltrated criminal rings and cartels, including Pablo Escobarās, by posing as a wealthy, mob-connected businessman. He helped manage the illicit fortunes of the MedellĆn and Cali cartels while gathering evidence that would lead to some of the largest money-laundering prosecutions in history.
He speaks to Insider about how the cartels layer their assets, and move money via āsmurfsā. He also covers the use of legitimate businesses, such as jewellery chains and mortgage brokerage companies.
Mazur is the author of āThe Infiltrator,ā which became a New York Times bestseller and inspired a 2016 film of the same title, starring Bryan Cranston (as Mazur) and John Leguizamo. Robert Mazur spent two years undercover laundering tens of millions of dollars for Pablo Escobar's cartel, which enabled them to control countries and presidents of countries through corruption. Operation C-Chase was a multiagency task force to prosecute the biggest money launderers of the MedellĆn cartel, and Mazur built the persona of Robert Musella to infiltrate the cartel and the banks supporting them. He embedded himself in real businesses, including an air charter service with a private jet, a jewelry chain with 30 locations on the East Coast, an investment company, a mortgage-brokerage business, and a brokerage firm with a seat on the New York Stock Exchange. The key to doing undercover work is building an undercover persona with as many traits in common as possible. Mazur climbed up the ladder to meet bigger and bigger people, selling dollars to importers around the world who otherwise have to go through their central bank and spend 25% of their money to officially get dollars. Most of the money would wind up in bank accounts controlled by the cartel in Panama, and from there, they would distribute it around the world wherever they wanted to hide it. Some money was smuggled out of the United States down to Colombia and used to make payoffs to people in the military or prosecutors or politicians or whoever's help they needed to buy.
