How is Sri Lanka reacting to the Katchatheevu island issue heating up in India? | WION Originals

A political row erupted in India over an island. A tiny island between India & Sri Lanka known as Katchatheevu Island became a hot topic. A few days back, PM Modi hit out at Congress over its decision to hand over the island to Sri Lanka in the 1970s. Sri Lanka gave its first reaction to the controversy.

  1. As a Sri Lankan I think China is the true friend of Sri Lankans. India always influences Sri Lanka. We Sri Lankans should always strengthen our economy and do business with our true Sri Lankan friend, China. India's Modi is Sri Lanka's enemy 🇱🇰

  3. Sri Lankans should understand that this is being done at the time of 2024 elections. If you think in an Indians perspective the Congress party of India gave away that island to Sri Lanka just like that. And Congress party deserves to be exposed. India will not attack on Sri Lanka to give that Island back to India because it was given legally by India by the then Indian government. If you think in an Indian perspective it is an attack on opposition Congress party. This is an attack on Congress party.

  5. Sri Lankans should understand that for dacades it has being a integral part of India, a livelihood for many poor Tamil fisherman.. after this Island was handed over to Sri Lanka by previous Govt. of Congress many of these Fisherman committed suicides and many struggled for their survival. As a good friend of India and as a responsible country Sri Lanka should hand it back to India again.. if They'll do so we will be thankful to them forever.

  6. If your engagement is genuinely aimed at fostering cooperation and not merely a political maneuver to secure the majority of Tamil Nadu votes, then you have the option to withdraw from the agreement Giving Away" Katchatheevu signed by Mrs. Gandhi and Mrs. Bandaranayake. Similarly, the Sri Lankan government retains the equal right to withdraw from the The Indo-Lanka Agreement of 1987 signed by Mr. Gandhi and Mr. Jayawardena. Sri Lanka is encouraged to consider this option.

  7. Not all countries are dharamshala like India, where anyone can come and stay. If you go to other countries territory illegally, you will be prosecuted
But in India. Illegal Bangladeshis, Rohingyas and even pakistanis can come and settle without any problem.

  8. As a Sri Lankan, I'm genuinely curious as to why India wants it back. If its ownership was declared to SL 50 years ago AND seeing the small island is WITHIN Sri Lankan sea territory (it is to the SL's side in the Maritime Boundary charts), why does India want it?
