How Germany Gave Belgium Its Highest Mountain (And Then Tried To Get It Back)

In the east of Belgium lies Eupen-Malmedy, the country’s only German-speaking region, which also boasts Belgium’s highest summit, the Signal De Botrange. But why do the people speak German here? And if they speak German, why does the mountain have a French name? I went to the High Fens to find out more…

  2. As geologically speaking, most of the Ardennes are totally eroded away 'peak mountains' from too many millions of years ago… it formed a high plateau, flat or slightly hilled, however, with deep cut river valleys ! It has the upside down geography. Woodlands in steep valleys with some spectacular rock formations and countless caves, DOWN there, versus pasture land with cows/aggriculture on the top… including the main road network. It is what makes up the unique Ardennes landscape.

  3. Out of topic, But, can you make a video that explain about complicated Belgium's Baarle-Hertog and Netherlands' Baarle-Nassau borders and why did it happened? Still can't get my head wrapped around it. 🤔

  4. I like the reference to skiing. Not far south of there is the ski resort of Luxembourg, which during the three years I lived in the Grand Duchy only had enough snow to actually go cross-country skiing for about a week. The rest of the time, it's a farmer's field and a rather unremarkable clump of trees.

  5. I went there in the Summer of 2021 and it's one of the most beautiful places for nature sight seeing in Belgium with the Kalmthoutse Heide being a close second. Just the fact that it's so open and wide gives you such a feeling of freedom, incredibly amazing, highly recommend visiting. Thank you for covering this place in a video! 🙂
