How California Fire Air Tankers Fight Fire? #california

We’ll take a look at how air power, specifically air tankers that suck water from Lakes in just a Couple of seconds using scoopers to fight fire from the sky.
Cal Fire operates its own fleet of aircraft, stationed at 14 airfields and 11 helicopter bases across the state.

This setup allows most aircraft to reach fires within about 20 minutes, as long as there aren’t heavy Breeze like the Santa Ana Winds.
The fleet includes tactical “O”V-10s, Broncos which often serve as lead aircraft, directing the coordinated efforts of the team.
All of the aircraft work together, often making multiple flights each day to combat fires. Their goal?

To precisely guide and support larger assets like the Super Scooper and the Boeing Seven Four Seven Super Tanker in dropping water or fire retardant, often sourced from nearby water bodies.
Cal Fire also relies on its iconic Bell Huey helicopters, made famous during the Vietnam War.

These versatile helicopters can pick up water from nearly any source using their attached buckets, making them invaluable for fighting wildfires in even the most remote areas.

What Is the Retardant Used to Fight Fires?

In battling the fires in Los Angeles, aerial operations have primarily involved aircraft collecting seawater from the Pacific Ocean.

However, bright pink and red retardants have also been utilized to coat flames on the ground.

Even after the water evaporates, the fertilizer remains on the ground, forming a visible red stripe that can persist for days or even weeks, providing a continued barrier against fire spread.

  1. It would be awesome if they could figure out how to fill the tanks of the 747 without the need to land as well. It would make it a much more effective fire fighting apparatus. They should special build a new aircraft as big as the MARS allowing the pilots to drop larger amounts of water per drop and returning must faster.

  3. From what I’ve heard. USA doesn’t have any of these super scoopers. These are from Canada. But apparently this video is something else that might actually be right, I might actually just be wrong with observation

  4. CalFire doesn’t operate the Super Scooper or 747. They call them in when needed.

CAL FIRE’s current aviation fleet includes Grumman S-2T Airtankers, Bell UH-1H Super Huey Helicopters, Sikorsky S-70i Helicopters, North American OV-10A (& 1 D Model) Bronco Air Tactical Aircraft and C-130 Hercules Airtankers.

  5. My friends in California (I'm indian) are saying when a house is about to get fire because nearby house is burnt down so that house is next in line of fire ,the fire department 🚒 vehicles standing their are saying they are out of water but when the new house get caught in fire and almost half burnt new vehicle come up with water and now instead of preventing another next house they throw entire water on almost burnt house
Is it true or just misconception because they said when their house got burnt they requested to use water to save neighbors house instead of their burnt house but fire workers denied that

  7. the wind from fan/engine exhause of low height aircrafts and from helicopters bring to fasten natural wind. so they dont distinguishing fire, but blame the more defective fire, make bigger fire. so, stop using helicopters and aircrafts there.

  8. That super tanker is on the auction block. That is why you don’t see it being used. Californian said they don’t need it or couldn’t afford to pay its cost. It’s owned by corporate companies and they charge the government to use it. They don’t make a profit that just charge them the operating cost.

  9. this video devotes quote a bit of time to cover the Super Scooper and makes zero mention of its Canadian design, origins, and manufacture and that Canada sent them to help Los Angeles. So I will pay credit due, to Canada, Alberta, BC, or Quebec where these Super Scoopers are from.
