Two severe power blackouts affected most of northern and eastern India on 30 and 31 July 2012. The 30 July 2012 blackout affected over 400 million people and was briefly the largest power outage in history by number of people affected, beating the January 2001 blackout in Northern India (230 million affected). The blackout on 31 July is the largest power outage in history. The outage affected more than 620 million people, about 9% of the world population, or half of India’s population, spread across 22 states in Northern, Eastern, and Northeast India. An estimated 32 gigawatts of generating capacity was taken offline. Of the affected population, 320 million initially had power, while the rest lacked direct access. Electric service was restored in the affected locations between 31 July and 1 August 2012.

  3. I remember that day, I has just joined class 11 in different far school. At around 2.30 our Headmaster came and asked that whole country is out of electricity and we should leave now and reach however possible. The suburban trains were down. We walked more than 3-4 km and then took bus. It was totally filled the within 20 minutes road was filled with chaos and media. Extra non transport vehicles were on road charging extra money for passengers. We reached home early but situation in Kolkata was tense, the suburban train was not running, mamta bannerjee was rail minister back then and she ran local trains with diesel engines. Luckily CESC had some kind of stock or something which helped restore the supply earlier and power was restored by 10 pm in Kolkata. Everything become normal by then. Shinde was power minister at that time, he was also home minister for some time and tried to manipulate 26/11 investigation
