It’s the 17th of January 1945 in the outskirts of the French town of Herrlisheim.
Obersturmführer Erwin Bachmann is in a sidecar when he spots two Panther tanks right on the edge of the town. Taking command he goes on to engage with 14 Shermans tanks. 2 Panthers versus 14 Shermans! With perfect timing and planning he directs the Panthers to block the Sherman’s in causing 12 to surrender. When the dust settled Bachmann’s actions with just 2 Panthers resulted in the capture of 60 American tank crew members, the release of 20 German POW’s, and the capture of 12 completely intact Sherman tanks. Obersturmführer Erwin Bachmann would be awarded the Knight’s Cross for his leadership, and the tank crews would be awarded the Iron Cross for their performance. The captured Shermans would go on to serve for the German army, being used in anger against the allies in the dying months of the war.

Corrections:
09:53 Erwin Bachmann volunteered in the Waffen-SS in August 1939 and served in the SS-regiment Germania, then SS-division Viking, then SS-division Frundsberg. We removed SS insignia from the uniform as we often do due to monetization issues on platforms such as Facebook. Some viewers raised the issue out that we didn’t point out the fact that Bachmann was SS and per the Nuremberg trials a war criminal. We agree with their assessment, and we should have mentioned these details in the script.

  13. Lol 😆 those 20 german prisoners were probably so pissed knowing the war was lost anyway at that point and had been safe now as the Americans POWs now there ordered to pick up a weapon and to get back into the losing fight…damn

  14. Even if the M4A3E8 76mm Sherman got a shot off on the panthers they couldn’t penetrate the sloped 50mm armor if the hit them in the tracks or the turret ring or the mantlet

  18. I wonder how many of the German prisoners that were liberated by his actions were later killed before the war ended 4 months lateer?(if they ended up in Berlin, most of them.) By January of 1945, it would have been obvious that Germany was not going to win. He was very brave(or fool hardy) but in the end his actions helped to continue that awful war. As usual, you animation is superb.

  20. I really appreciated this video especially because you mention the village of Herrlisheim which is in Alsace (France) and in Alsace we are often told this kind of story of the second world war when we are little and especially during the commemoration of the capitulation of Germany.
