HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series is here and the ninth episode delivered what felt like the first half of a two part finale. Episode 9 focused on the characters in King’s Landing after King Viserys’ (Paddy Considine) death. Princess Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) is still his named heir, but Alicent (Olivia Cooke) now believes her husband changed his mind on his deathbed.

She also learns that the small council have been plotting to place Aegon on the Iron Throne behind her back. This leads to a situation where she battles with her father Otto (Rhys Ifans) in an effort to try to ensure a smooth transition of power.

This video doesn’t contain any book spoilers that will reveal future events that have happened on screen.

  1. I liked how all the focus was on the Greens in this episode. Looking forward to a Black focused episode for the finale to see how they respond to Alicent and Otto's moves. Didn't love all of their choices in this episode but do like their confidence. Should make for an exciting final episode for the season. Let me know what you think.

  2. You wonder what the writers are trying to say about that character (Aemond)? Well, what else can be said about a psycho, even one that studies history and philosophy, self-proclaimed as "decent man with no sense for depravity"? 🤮

  3. I’m with you on this episode. It was good but it though me off a few times. The writing felt watered down a bit, which isn’t usual for this show.

(Compared to anything else on tv, it was brilliant)

I expected the dragon to burn everyone through the open doors. Amazing and expensive, but disappointing that the foreshadowing was obvious.

  4. I hope in season 2 we have a flash back scene that shows how they first came to that arrangement regarding Alicents feet and Leary’s jacking it.
I bet that was an interesting conversation.

  5. I was worried about this show before it began, but I am so glad that they have done it justice. You can tell that those involved behind the camera actually care for and appreciate the source material of which they are adapting, and it feels good to have my mind fully involved in Westeros again. Something that was taken away from me after season 8.

  6. It’s giving me the same vibe as when Drogon and Jon had a stare down. After his mom gets stabbed to death, all he does is scream in his face 🤨. I guess this is what suspension of disbelief is, but it’s just not believable bc it doesn’t make sense

  7. Aegon finally getting into the spirt of the moment at his coronation was a fun reminder of Joffrey's surprised reaction to the cheering crowd at the Sept of Baelor in S3 of GoT … only in his case, the people of King's Landing were primarily cheering for Margaery Tyrell.

What does it say about the smallfolk that they'll cheer for literally anyone as their king — all it seems to take is a large crowd of spectators as they're forcibly herded into the dragon pit — along with the sheep that were also swept up in the herd🐑🐑🐑🐑

  8. Aemond is next in line assuming aegon dies soon or isn’t king and his heir is a 7 (ish) year old. He would be too young to rule so aemond makes sense as the next ruler in the meantime

  9. To be clear, the "misunderstanding" about Viserys talking about Aegon is that he was talking about Aegon the Younger, right? Or just that he was trying to tell Alicent about the prophecy?

  10. Rhaneys learned they weren't letting any dragons out so I think having her break out was fine. That alone would've been a nice spectacle but it became problematic when she faced down all the Greens. Why are they just standing there when a dragon is breaking through the floor? If they had all been forced to flee I think that would've worked better and we wouldn't have had that awkward scene where Rhaenys does nothing, and just leaves. They wanted the one on one showdown and we didn't need it.

  11. Hey Pete, following a long pause after BCS, and as a long time GOT fan, I started watching HOD, and I am glad you are covering it as well. Great job on your part as always, but I’ve come to a realization that after BCS, from every angle (script, cinematography, acting etc) it is not easy to even come close to what BCS has achieved. Therefore, a bit disappointed here. Hopefully it will improve. On the other hand, if you’re not already I believe you should cover Succession, which is not only a great show, but also apparently BCS’s biggest competitor (awardswise) as well.

  12. Was not my favorite episode either but I did really like the ending. Yeah I know it should not have been that easy for Rhaenys to get her dragon and yeah she took out a few townsfolk and was rocking some armor she had no reason to have…but I still loved the scene. I think she was smart enough to realize, especially after seeing Lord Caswell's body hanging, that things were not going to go her way so she was left with little choice in my mind. It was pretty much pledge allegiance to the idiot Aegon or die, so it was awesome as hell to see Rhaenys give them all the flying finger.

  13. This is a good series but it takes to long to start the Main story. Sofar this just about Royal Life drama and stuff hope they will reveal some upcomming war or Zombie Apocalypse. If its stays just abou Royal People dramme its just wont work.

  14. Your stuff is just so good and tight. It impressed me several shows you've covered. But even in something as competative and overly covered as this show, I think you stand out!

  15. I think Aemond saying HE is next in line, despite Aegon having kids, means the greens would never bring peace and even if Rhaenyra's line is wiped out, Alicent's line will continue to war with each other. None of Alicent's kids seem to care about each other. By contrast, Rhaenyra's kids and Daemon's kids all seem to get along and have each other's back. The irony is, if the war never happened, Alicent's kids may have been in more danger from each other than from Rhaenyra.

  16. I really enjoyed your recap. Looking forward to your next one. I'm thinking now E10 will be the blacks discussing everything and informing their supporters what went down and riding off toward King's Landing on their dragons at the end. I don't anticipate seeing much of a fight until next season.

  17. Rhaenys’s ambition has been stressed throughout this whole season. She is very intelligent, and she knows that with her husband out of the picture, if rhaenera and Alicent wipe each other out, she may have a claim to the throne. It was strategic. if she wipes out the hightowers right now, there’s no hope for her claim, because rhaenera will just come in and take the throne

  18. I don't like the scene with the dragon staring down the Greens because it makes no sense without actually killing them. Killing them in that moment would have been the only logical choice. So imo that scene shouldn't exist.

  19. @Pete Peppers If Aegon abdicates the throne BEFORE he gets crowned, his whole line of succession is disinherited. Which means that his sons lose any rights to the throne and Aemond becomes the king. But even if this doesn't apply, still Aegon's both sons are too young, so the next adult male in line becomes the protector of the realm until the son comes of age. Actually when Aegon II was later hurt, Aemond indeed became the protector of the realm until his brother was capable of ruling again. Anyway, in such cases, according to our own history, the child is not guaranteed that will live to become an adult or that he will be allowed to actually rule, once he becomes an adult….

  20. You have a misunderstanding about inheritance. If the eldest child dies BEFORE they are crowned, it isn't their children that would be next in line but their oldest brother.

And then, you are t sure how killing Rhaenyra would solve the problem of a disputed succession? Well she can't become queen if she's dead, and it doesn't matter how much other people might have wanted her to be queen if she's dead. They aren't ever going to keep fighting for her memory or something, and her kids are too young to take power directly.

Also, that dragon killed a couple dozen people, not THOUSANDS.
