Hours shortened at popular Seattle beaches due to safety concerns

Alki Beach and Golden Gardens will close an hour earlier this summer, according to the Seattle Parks and Recreation Department.

A Memorial Day weekend on Alki Beach is filled with people soaking in the sun.

“I come down often probably once or twice a month and come down for a walk with friends and enjoy the atmosphere,” said Kira Smith. “Every time I come here i have no safety concerns at all. It’s just a great day at the beach and just hanging out and vibing.”

But everyone’s time on the beach is being cut a bit shorter.

The parks are currently open from 4 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. through Sept. 3. The parks will return to their normal closing time of 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 4.

  2. So innocent law abiding citizens are having their time at the beach cut short because Seattle can’t handle the criminals.
Try arresting and locking them up.

  4. …can't have nice things ? This is how great places to live gradually turn bad. I call it 'hardening of the architecture' and I've been watching this social disease get worse since sixth grade, when my school wrapped the entrances with chain link fence, for safety. Turning a classic building into a shoddy prison. A nice area into a slum. That beach is what makes the area cool. Give that time back, and ask why it ever closes, at all. Why do parks close at night? Is it because someones grandma thought, "Of course" 100 years ago ?

  5. Those white residents living in those expensive apartments/ condos are the reason. They want to control all waterfronts, not just Alki, its Seward Park, and other parks like these.

  6. Whatever happened to closing at dusk? Every public park here and especially the water front closes at dusk just north of Seattle. 11 pm I don't care what others think is late.

  7. So instead of having police patrol these high crime areas we just close it early for all lmao. What a inept group of "leaders" we have. We going to act like the criminals aren't just going to find someplace else?

  9. As long as Seattle has weak leadership nothing will change. Do u really think closing early will make a difference, your foolish if you do ? The parties will still go on along with the violence. Seattle is to sensitive of a city to have any bark to their bite. They are afraid of hurting criminals feelings.
