eBay sellers, we’ve seen it all! Dodging dingleberries is a sadly a common occurrence if you plan to do this full-time! Here’s some of the WORST stories I’ve got. I also give my take on how you can stay grounded when this happens to you!

That's why i glad ebay does automatic payments. No more buyer ignoring you or saying they want to cancel
I bought a X-men 544 cgc 9.8 from you on eBay. Great looking slab.
Seriously what an idiot with the JACK KIRBY signiture. Wish it had been me i would have loved to get that!!! And I had someone blatantly switch out a raw book on me on ebay. They straight asked for a picture of the back cover of the book. As soon as they get the book they send a picture with a crease straight across the back cover!! BS!!
In 3 years selling on ebay I've gotten 1 bad review. It was for not putting a tracking number on his order. Kinda petty but definitely my fault.
The most problems I've had is with bad sellers on eBay, so many comics shipped in manila envelopes no protection, missing pages, cutouts, too many to list. I've been selling comics on eBay for over 20 years, and you've even bought from me, I would put a problem definitely more on bad sellers than buyers. I can count on one hand the problem buyers I've had in the past couple of years, out of thousands of sales. I guess the bad tales get the views, the good tales are boring.
I found an x-men 139 signed by John byrne on the splash in a dollar bin I wasn't upset!
"but damn man shit gets a little crazy some times". wise words
Right before Christmas I sold around 25 raw books (mostly keys) on FB Marketplace. I gave my opinion on grades and the ones that were in rougher shape were G/VG. Some had water stains, rippling , ticks, etc. Lower grade books worthy of the grade but certainly the exceptions to mostly VF/NM for the rest. Shipped them out and buyer contacts upon receipt saying the lower grade ones were not what would accept and wanted a full refund. Threatened me that he was law enforcement and I was a fraudster. I thought this was a bit harsh but I fully refunded his money and he sent all the books back, and then gave me a horrible review saying I sold crap. My only bad review…
I was wondering why no raw when I was cruising your eBay shop today. Lol guess you answered that. I'm cool with it, you're always fair in the claim sales anyway.
Seller cancel my 2 orders cus i got it for a very low price i won the bidding and cancel it without telling me. I was so upset i really like the item so bad. Keep messaging him but never response back. And then when i saw whats the reason of cancellation. he put it on ebay im the one who cancel it?? Omg. I was so shocked. I didn’t even mention anything about cancellation. Sad.😔
i have not been able to sell on ebay since someone messed up my account on there selling false items and rang up a huge bill and even though ebay knew it wasn't me that did it, they still blocked my seller account. so, i only sell on places like facebook marketplace.
I just closed my ebay account few weeks ago. I sell vintage toys and comics, Dude bought a race set from me. Listing said sold as is. Ask questions if you need. Item sold before Christmas and was delvered, Dude waited mid January to file clai, and say item was bad. ebay sided him and made me pay them back. I got item back but closed my ebay account after 15 years. Trying Etsy and my antique store. Done with Ebay!!
My son and I are gearing up to start selling books live on whatnot and we aare both new to the selling game , I really appreciate your advice and have been watching your show since before you made the decision to sell full-time. Thanks
eBay always sides with the buyer unfortunately.
As for Joe my response would be this a retail store just like a brick and mortar store if you want to get a refund you have to return it with receipt end of storey
Bro being upset for a jack kirby sig is insane 😂
These people make me look like a saint when i forgot to pay you for a couple of weeks, i paid you though after i remembered i had to fill out your form. LOL. I have bought from you like six times including the first app of Mystique. I do not screw people over and would only in a life and death situation ever ask for a refund. As for payment plans i would only ask if you had a Giant size X-Men that i could afford and i would pay at least half up front. I do not like stealing as i was robbed when i was at work and lost over 40k worth of cards and figures.
Ebay, at least here in Australia, is completely on the side of the buyer. Case in point: a buyer who refuses tracked postage, claims that the comic was never sent and receives a refund. Ebay doesn't care about such obvious scams (ie theft) because they just want their exorbitant fees.
As someone who sold a part of his collection to James and had a wonderful and easy transaction, it's a shame to hear about the crappy people out there and those types of stories.
One from me personally was a bowling ball that I sold on eBay. Clearly listed it as used with multiple pictures of the ball, fully drilled, and where the holes were and all of the span information. Once the guy received it, he messaged angry that the ball was not brand new and demanded a refund. Luckily eBay sided with me as a proactively opened a case against him after receiving those messages and knew where it was headed once I refused the refund. A shame people use transactions as a way to take advantage of others
thank you for all of your videos. i use them to further educate myself on what to look for when hunting in the wild. i sit with pen and paper during your underrated key videos. and yes, thank you again for letting loose of your secret, valuable issues to memorize. keep hunting!
I buy on eBay a lot. Like more than half of my books comes from it. My bad experience was with an auction. What if? 105. First Spider-Girl. Made a starting bid for $10 knowing it would rise in the following days. It never happened. NOBODY else put any bid into it. I won it for $10. I was very happy and yeah, surprised too, but paid right away and waited for my book. A day later the seller contacted me claiming that he just could not find the book that he looked everywhere but it was misplaced. He placed a refund for my $10. I told him I did not believe his BS but Sadly could not do anything else. A week passed and I went directly to his page and what did I find? He had listed the same book again!
Once, many years ago i was selling my childhood Fireball Island game in eBay. It was worth a couple hundred bucks at the time. Some scammer claimed he bought it and wanted me to ship it. Of course he never even paid for it.
I rarely get bad feedback on eBay but when I do it's stupid things. I sold a factory sealed dvd of an old television show and the buyer gave me negative feedback — said the show 'wasn't what he remembered as a kid' and complained about the editing. (??) One time I couldn't find the $5 sale item in my inventory and had a to cancel. I gave the buyer a huge apology, good feedback and a full refund and I still got negative feedback. There's some really crappy ppl out there.
I’m always amazed at the number of just ordinary scumbags in the world. People with no moral compass whatsoever. This world needs a whole lot more Jesus in it.
Man. Infuriating stories all around. People can suck
That last story says a lot about the current market. It’s about getting one over or one-up on someone else in a transaction. The market is full of vendors vs vendors and far less “collectors” than people want to admit.
Collect what you love, but don’t overpay.
And INVEST in secured registered assets, not collectibles, especially if you don’t have a positive net worth.
I’ve been prepping a lot of my collection to sell and I definitely don’t want to do anything online…what is your experience with doing flea markets? I live in NC and am considering setting up a table at our local flea markets here in the spring. Any tips for how I should approach?
This is why we cannot have nice things.
do you think Jack Kirby's signature will increase the value on any old issue – not just keys and #1's?
Used to sell a lot on EBay. Stopped selling on EBay completely, the bullshit buyers tried to pull was too much for me. (I got even with one but that's a long story) Ebay always sides with buyers no matter how ridiculous.
Unrelated question: If I want to own all the individual issues that tell the whole story of Superman Red and Superman Blue from the late 1998s, could it be possible?
That's the name I give to Sticky goose
Scams are generally pretty rare, but when it happens to me I just recover the loss by putting up prices on great selling items by a small percentage. After a couple of months loss recovered.
These are reasons why I really don’t want to sell on ebay.
do one on seller scams: not shipping item, drawing it out past 30 days so buyer cant get refund (just happened to me); starting auction and not shipping item bc youre not happy with the price, forcing buyer to ask for refund…then turning around to resell item (just happened to me); saying item has "water damage" (after you just photographed and posted item) bc you regret selling it at that price (happened to me twice in a row). i actually left bad feedback calling out seller 2 for that behaviour and it was removed for "slander"…fucking ridiculous. just as many bad sellers as there are buyers.
Thanks for sharing these unfortunate anecdotes. If it’s a Bullshit Tax, then they aren’t Scammers…they’re Bullshitters. 😬
This is horrible. Best I could do is set my eBay filter to keep first time buyers and those with low feedback and low transactions from viewing my listings.
There's nothing that p!sses me off more than dishonest comic book buyers especially on e! They ruin it for us honest collectors! I use to sell raw silver and bronze comics on eBay and hated it. Although, it do enjoy finding golden age gems there for cheap. God bless you in the future and enjoy your content.
Ya, ebay is dangerous sometimes!
was going to watch, but ads to begin video, then 1 minute in… I'm out.
Man, this is rough hearing these stories. It's a tough business and it's good you've been able to learn and build from these poor experiences. Great that you're sharing this so that prospective sellers know some of the potential pitfalls!
Man! What a headache just to sell a comic. WHAT IS WRONG with these people???
I recently sold a low grade raw copy of Deathstroke the Terminator #1 (1991) at a very low price. Showed pics of all the flaws, said that it presents well.
Never got any feedback from the buyer, eBay did the auto feedback which was nice because I have a flawless record on my new selling account. Funny thing is, the guy who bought the book could have had me deliver it to him personally since he lived very close.
I sell ungraded books all the time and have never had a problem. I never state what grade the book is. Every description begins with this"
"Grading is subjective. Please examine all photos to make your own assessment of the comics condition before bidding."
I sold an ASM 129 with detached staples and I made sure to put in the title and in description that the cover was detached. Anyways auction goes through and after the guy won i reached out because you know some people don’t read descriptions and say hey just making sure you saw that the cover was detached and he said yea he’s aware ship out the book and he flags my selling as unclear luckily eBay did side with me. Moment of Silence I guess
How would you ever be able to mend the fences with someone who went on a smear campaign?
