Hope and Resistance: Voices of a People’s History of the United States in the 21st Century

We look at voices of a people’s history inspired by the late great historian Howard Zinn’s groundbreaking book, A People’s History of the United States, which helped reshape how history is taught in classrooms. Twenty years ago, Zinn and Anthony Arnove began organizing public readings of historical texts referenced in A People’s History of the United States. The two would go on to publish a book collecting theses texts under the title Voices of a People’s History of the United States. While Zinn died in 2010, his work continues to inspire millions across the country and the globe. Arnove and Hailey Pessin have just published a new book titled Voices of a People’s History of the United States in the 21st Century: Documents of Hope and Resistance. It gathers more than 100 speeches, essays and other documents of activism, protest and social change. We speak with them about the book, and feature readings from texts featured in it.

  1. I really don't think it's cool for anyone to take it upon themselves to associate their work with the work of Zinn through this type of branding. It opens up all kinds of problems including opportunities for neoliberals to sour the legacies of the great progressive authors. Just create your own titles and your own branding and succeed on your own merits.

  3. One thing I know for certain human has since crossed the line of being just human being period. With that we are living the consequence of exploring the unknown. Now is the exploration of human endeavour to be stopped No its part and passel of our nature every thing we do is what we truly are, Stop we can't but happy are those among us who managed to be just satisfied enough with basic living needs. Work enough to survive. Reproduce teach the young traditional laws and wait for ones time to come.Hankering for more drives us insane and nothing can be done about it its just the side of us which can't won't be controlled.

  5. There is no intersectionality between “race” and sexuality. Fabricating one, takes away value to a people’s right to live on their land. What a people do in their land(sexuality) is their business. Focus people, or get lost, stay lost.

  7. Howard Zinn was a man of great intelligence and I donated his book to my library. I read "The People's History of the United States" when it first came out as I listened to him for years speak, even on your program, Amy.
Thank you again for having Haley Pessin and Anthony Arnove on your program.
Congratulations on their new book. Another book I will buy. All voices need to be heard by those who has not been heard and continuing to be and one must grateful due to those that care with their writings of truth to power. They have been and still are. RIP 🙏 Howard Zinn.
Creative arts are the glues that help holds our world together.
    Thank all of you.

  9. NO AGAENCY OR PERSON OR ORGANIZATION CAN ASSIGN THE RIGHT TO MURDER AN UNBORN FETUS. ABORTON IS NOT A RIGHT BUT MERELY A PRACTICE WHICH DIRECTLY INCLUDES MURDER OF A DEFENSLESS BABY. THE INFANT IS DENIED THE RIGHT TO LIFE WITHOUT ANY APPEAL ON THE INFANT´S BEHALF. THINKING OF THE LACK OF LAW AND RESPECT FOR ALL HUMAN LIFE FILLS ME WITH HORROR AD THE PHOENICIANS WHO ABORTED THEIR FIRST BORN CHILD. THE SAME HORROR APPLIES TO COUNTRIES LIKE CHINA WHO KILLS WITHOUT ANY RIGHTS RESPECTED FOR THE INFANT. IT IS A SIGN OF BARBARISM AND SAVAGE RAPACIOUS MURDER ALLOWED FOR THE CONVENIENCE OF THE PARENTS, WHO ARE ANYTHING BUT PARENTS.

  10. I APPRECIATE LLISTENING TO THE TWO SPEECHES GIVEN IN A CHURCH IN CHICAGO, WHERE TOO MANY HAVE DIED SENSLESSNESSLY ON THE STREETS OF CHICAGO. THE SPEECHES WERE TOUCHING AS THEY WERE RATIONAL AND ETHICAL, IF ETHICS HAVE YET ANY PLACE IN AMERICAN SOCIETY.?

  11. in many ways Howard Zinn is a fraud. His anti American stance was so one sided, he never went after fellow tribesmen who ran /run the central banks etc, he just ended up being an anti-white racist.
